Yes. The missing d-pad is also my biggest concern. Haven't bought a Switch yet, but when I tried it, I didn't like the buttons at all.
I am waiting for Nintendo to release something usable.
I can't believe that so many are ok with the current situation. It seems like a lot of people haven't tried a proper d-pad at all for classic 2D gaming?
For me a great d-pad is necessary to fully enjoy classic games.
I wonder if the 8Bitdo Xstander Clip Holder for SFC30/SNES30 could fit the Switch?
I have both Xstander and controllers, but no Switch yet. But the Xstander can fit some really large phones, so maybe it will work with the Switch?
Anyone who knows? And is it comfortable to use, if it actually fit?
Gamevice should not battle Nintendo, but work with them. They should just use their know-how and make some great alternative joy-cons. Perhaps with a great and traditional d-pad?
Come-on Gamevice. There is a business opportunity here. Grab it!!!
Who ever wanted to play these classics with touch screen buttons, are out of their mind. That is just not the way to play them, so let it go.
No matter how good the touch screen controls are, it will just never come close to using a proper controller. These games where made with those precise input control's in mind. Everything less is just a waste of time.
Just go play some Rayman Jungle Run and Super Mario Run, that was made for touch inputs, if you do not have a physical controller.

Nintendo has always had a huge range of products, targeting every possible customer from budget to premium.
A sale in the budget line is better than no sale at all. And right now there is still huge demand for a 3DS / 2DS. They are also very cheap to produce, and are surely more profitable per unit than the Switch right now.
Nintendo would be stupid not to cash in on their legacy products, while demand is still high. And I do not think it will hurt Switch sales that much?
Exactly. And the GB micro also came out after the DS was released.

@TwilightOniAngel
You know. The reason why this happened for the industry, was because of the very slow read-speed of Blu-ray Disc's, that PS4 and X1 uses.
Actually, many PS4 games can easily fit on a Blu-ray Disc, but it's just to slow for gaming. That's why you have to install all games. But it does not have to be that way. It's just a stupid limitation of the current generation of gaming media-discs.
Nintendo has always been against that idea, witch is the reason why they did not use Blu-ray for the Wii U.
And now with the Switch, they use fast cartridges to prevent game-installs. So I am not even sure Nintendo would allow this on the Switch yet.
Is it even possible yet for developers, to make a game-install / assets download from a physical game on Switch?
I am not sure, that Nintendo would allow this for every game? Perhaps only in special cases, where the full game can't fit on a 32 GB cartridge?
It's not something you just do as a publisher, but you need Nintendo's permission to use their cloud-infrastructure, to host assets for Download for a physical game. And all because you are to greedy to pay for a cartridge with bigger capacity?!?
Would Nintendo really allow that?
The Switch needs a browser for a lot of tings, like public Wi-FI access etc. So Nintendo provided one for that, but was hiding it for the end-user.

Year I know... it is not the best d-pad, and the position is also not that good on the 3DS, but it is still much better than those buttons on the Joy-cons
It’s not just the British that pronounce “z” as “zed”. The vast majority of the English speaking world does this. The primary exception, of course, is in the United States where “z” is pronounced “zee”.
Also, in most European languages, like German, French or Scandinavian languages "Z" is pronounced "Zed" or "Zett", just like in proper "British" English. And in southern Europe it's more like "Zetta" or something.
So it is really US that is the odd one here. I have no idea where the weird "Zee" came from, because no European language have that pronunciation.
I keep playing on my lovely 3DS, where 2D games still are playable. (..and yes.. I know the pro-controller has a d-pad, but it's not a real option for a portable gamer like myself )
But Nintendo should really consider making the Switch an iPad killer for its core audience. Why not?
Finally Nintendo has made a device that actually can compete with the iPad on a technological level. So why not try to win back some of the lost customer segments Nintendo had in the pre smart-device era?
Back in 2006 every little kid had a DS and played Mario and Pokémon games. Nintendo sold around 150 million DS units back then, and families with younger children where a big and important customer segment for Nintendo, and one of the main reasons why DS sold so well.
3DS has "only" sold around 60 million units in comparison. Smart-devices took a big chunk of Nintendos core market.
Today younger children are mostly playing Goat Simulator, Minecraft, Angry birds and Lego games on their tablets. And they are also enjoying Netflix and YouTube on these devices, as well as fun playful leaning and drawing apps.
I really can't see why Nintendo couldn't provide similar experiences with the Switch, now when they have a device with matching functionalities and qualities like an iPad?
Why should Nintendo not try to win those customers back, and provide a real iPad alternative for them? For that to happen, they need media apps and a competent browser on the Switch.
I am not saying, that the Switch should be a fully multi purpose device like a normal tablet, offering office / productivity apps and so on. It is mainly a gaming console after all, and should stay that way. But Nintendo still needs to provide the most used core apps of a tablet, to satisfy the most important user demands for such a device.
Well yes. Tablets are multi purpose devices, that can do alot of things. But most people does only use their tablets for browsing, media streaming, gaming and social networking. Not many people are using their tablets for much else. Serious work and other stuff is mostly still done on PC.
Switch could easily provide the core tablet use scenarios with a few great media apps and a competent browser. This would make it a great tablet alternative, and make Switch relevant for other kind of customers.
Nintendo sold many more hand-held devices before smartphones and tablets hit the market.
An iPad is the biggest thread for a Nintendo device, when it comes down to attract families with younger kids. This has always been one of the core audiences for Nintendo, and a group of customers that have helped Nintendo sell more than 100 millions of hand-held devices before.
Switch simply needs to offer the most used tablet apps, to provide a real alternative for those families. And influencing young gamers is important for Nintendos future as well.
The hybrid concept of the Switch opens up new and exciting ways to enjoy gaming on a console, appealing to many different audiences and markets. The whole concept could also make the Switch a very exciting media device for a lot of people, competing both with iPads and Smart TV's / casting devices. It's a missed opportunity for Nintendo.
I am pretty sure, that media content apps will come down the road. Netflix and others are probably just waiting to see how well the Switch will sell. And that is understandable after the Wii U disaster. It's not all up to Nintendo.
Nintendo should also think about next time "Soccer-mom" is looking for a new tablet device for her kids. If the Switch offered similar functionality and apps like an iPad, then it could be a real alternative. This is not the case right now.
And it is very important for Nintendo to influence the new young generation of gamers. It's how we all became fans in the first place. Right now, Apple and Google are the company's that is influencing young gamers. This is not good for Nintendo in the long run.
The fact that the Switch is a hybrid console, makes is even more wired that it doesn't have a browser and media apps.
The Switch has the potential to be an real iPad/(Smart TV/TV-box) competitor due to its hybrid functionality.
All those different use scenarios of the Switch could make it a perfect media device as well, and open up a whole new market for Nintendo. It's a missed opportunity
Nintendo has a long history in making great family consoles and games. Therefore the main competitors in the last 8-5 years has been Apple/Google just as much as it has been Sony/MS. This is the reason why Nintendo shouldn't underestimate the smart-device business, and they should offer similar functionality and apps on the Switch.
The Switch can function as a tablet, and has a nice big screen with modern touch capabilities like other tablets in the market.
It would be great if Nintendo really took advantage of these features, and made a great browser for the Switch.
With core media apps like Netflix, Youtube etc. and a modern browser, Nintendo could actually take on the tablet market, and make it's own little niche there.
Why bring your iPad with you, if you already had all your needed functionality in the Switch. It could also be a real iPad alternative for many families with children.
People that prefer to use the browser on their phone or tablet instead of using it on 3DS or Wii U, do so because of the better experience, functionality and touch capabilities of the smart devices.
But the Switch have similar capabilities as smart devices, and could offer the same experience. So it would make much more sense to offer a browser and media apps on the Switch, and it could actually be a great success for Nintendo.
It could open up a whole new market for Nintendo.
I actually cancelled my preorder on Switch, because of the missing D-pad, and lack of interesting games at launch ( I do have a Wii U ).
Eventually I will have to buy one, when there are enough great games available. But the lack of a proper D-pad is a real letdown for me, as I am mostly a potable gamer and really do enjoy classic 2d games.
If Nintendo releases a special D-pad joy-con version down the line, then everything will be fine. But I will not buy any 2d games for the machine before that happens. 3DS will be my preferred console until then.
I am sad to hear so many gamers in here, that do not give a poop about a proper D-pad. That makes be think that Nintendo will not care either, and we have to live with those poor controls forever. My excitement for Switch couldn't be lower right now
You know... some times they properly really don't know them selves???
No one can predict the future, and how the console business evolves in two or three years. Nintendo can't do that either, so they can't really promise anything, and only give vague answers about future products.
This is way better, than promise something that they can't keep anyway.
A 3DS successor properly depends on how well the Switch sells. If the Switch is going the same way as the Wii U, then yes... We will definitely see a 3DS successor down the line.
Nintendo has also been vague about the prices for their new online service. Also to much frustration from fans and media. But Nintendo hasn't really decided yet, what the exact price should be. So it's better to be quiet about it, than promise something that they can't deliver later on.
I do not think, that Nintendo was expecting two years ago, that the 3DS will be doing so well here in 2017. They properly thought that all their investment and time would go into Switch development. But the market has responded differently than what they thought, so they will keep supporting the 3DS with great games. It would be stupid not to cash in on it.
To much praise given to those joy-cons. They do not have a proper d-pad, and is therefore a disaster in my eyes.
"Hey buddy, let's play two player on the go shall we?".
"Cool year. Those joy-cons look neat. What two player games do you have?"
"Street Fighter 2 and Contra... Oh never mind then!"
It would be so fantastic, if Nintendo released Joy-con d-pad versions, with no analog stick at all, but the d-pad in the proper spot where it belongs. That would be very pleasant to play 2d games with
I am mostly a portable gamer, and not having a proper d-pad on the go, is a real letdown for me.
I love 2d games and VC classic games, but think they are unplayable without a great d-pad.
I was hoping that the Switch could be a real alternative for my 3DS, but that will not happen before Nintendo releases a joy-con with d-pad. I hope it will happen one day, because I like almost everything else about the Switch.
The biggest problem with those joy-cons are the missing D-pad and no analog triggers. I am not sure what Nintendo was thinking here?
It's difficult to get excited about the Switch Virtual Console with those flaws really.
I can't really enjoy any NES or SNES game on the go without a proper D-pad, and the same goes for almost every other 2d game. And how will GameCube games work without analog triggers?
I am mostly a portable gamer, but without a d-pad, I will probably just play most 2d games on my 3DS, and not buy any for the Switch.
I really hope that Nintendo or someone else will release a d-pad joy-con for the Switch. It's the thing that bothers me the most right now.
This really does make the Switch less ideal for the go. The pro controller won't help much here.
Sonic Mania and Street Fighter without a d-pad? No thanks...
Classic Mario, Castlevania or Mega Man without d-pad? Are you nuts?!?!
I can't enjoy this, sorry. Already so many games I will have to skip
Nintendo have always got this right before, but not this time. It's like with the my old Xbox 360. I could never enjoy any classic 2d game on that system, because of a very poor d-pad on the original controller.
You are using the same arguments all the time, like: "Home console style games on the go, nobody wants that. ?!?" etc.
I think you are very wrong about those assumptions.
Most Nintendo games on the 3DS is actually very close to "Home console style games". Like there isn't much difference between "Super Mario 3D Land" and "Super Mario 3D World".
The 3DS even got strait up ports of "Donkey Kong Country Returns", "Xenoblade Chronicles", "Street Fighter IV", "Super Smash Bros", "Ocarina of time", "Star Fox 64", "Monster Hunter Tri" and "Super Mario Maker".
Games like "Resident Evil: Revelations" and "Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate" where actually ported the other way from 3DS to home consoles. That worked quite well too.
Then we have games like "Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon", "Fire Emblem Awakening", "Zelda: a link between worlds" and "Monster Hunter Generations" that could easily have been home consoles games as well. And there are many more games like that.
The gab between portable and home console games is almost gone. At least for Nintendo games.
So why should Nintendo continue to support two platforms, when the content is almost identical? Why use resources to make two versions of Mario Kart, Smash or Mario Maker, when they are almost the same?
I am not sure, if you are a portable gamer or not? And If you ever tried the 3DS or Vita? But those consoles have plenty of "Home console games".
I am mostly a portable gamer, and I am really looking forward to use the Switch on the go. Especially playing those big "Home console" like games I have become used to on 3DS and Vita.
For many families with kids, the Switch could be an iPad alternative the next time they are on the lookout for a new family gaming tablet.
This could be a really great market for the Switch, but then it needs all the basic media-content apps to succeed.
It's really a missed opportunity by Nintendo, if they are not trying to take a bite of the tablet market.
The Switch is the perfect device to challenge the iPad for some of it's audience. The PS4 and X1 can't do that. But Nintendo need to offer the right kind of content for this to succeed.
@retro_player_22
Well year, I will definitely get a pro controller.
But I am mostly a potable gamer, and looking forward to play all the classics on the go as well.
Playing NES and SNES games without a proper d-pad, is nothing that I look forward to, and the pro controller is not really for the go
Therefore I hope we will see a d-pad joy-con someday. Perhaps we will see third party joy-cons with good d-pad?
I do have the 8bitdo NES and SNES controllers though. Also the 8bitdo Xtander. The controllers works great on Wii U, so I hope they also work with the Switch? And that the Switch fits into the Xtander?
It's all about the pricing, and we don't know anything about that yet.
Nintendo doesn't have to offer anything extra , if it costs around 2-3 $ a month, and gives us a stable and reliable service. It must be much better than what we got for free on the Wii U, though.
Well to be fair, the chat app only makes sense if you play with someone online. And for that you need to pay. Therefore they have included the chat app in the subscription.
Also, if it was so cheap and easy for Nintendo to provide a great and reliable service like Xbox live, I think it would be very stupid to claim money for it right now.
If Switch was the only console to offer stellar and free online gaming, then Nintendo would probably attract many more customers than the competition.
But the added cost to provide something like that, and to compete, is forcing them to also charge money for this kind of service.
Maybe that is the reason why it ran so awful on Wii U, and where free?
Does Xbox Live work the same way? And maybe Nintendo is switching to similar expensive infrastructure solution, to provide the same kind of reliable service? That would explain the added cost.
"The servers available to games on Steam are usually hosted and ran by 3rd party companies and have little to no affiliation with steam, other than the fact that they are being tracked by valve. While MS is responsible for tracking games and hosting all content, requiring them to run far more dedicated servers than what the public is aware of, which is mostly maintained by developers and users on steam."
Sounds quite right? Maybe someone else have more knowledge about it?
You can't properly not compare PC and Console Online services then?
Of course there must be some infrastructure. Why else is Xbox Live so much more reliable and better than what Nintendo has been offering?
Why else did Splatoon and Mario Kart have problems at peak hours, and when there where big events? That would not happen if it's all like you described?
If it is all P2P, and nothing to do with infrastructure, how do you explain a recent report about: "Xbox Live faster, more reliable than PlayStation Network" ?

It’s not just the British that pronounce “z” as “zed”. The vast majority of the English speaking world does this. The primary exception, of course, is in the United States where “z” is pronounced “zee”.
Also, in most European languages, like German, French or Scandinavian languages "Z" is pronounced "Zed" or "Zett", just like in proper "British" English. And in southern Europe it's more like "Zetta" or something.
So it is really US that is the odd one here. I have no idea where the weird "Zee" came from, because no European language have that pronunciation.
Re: Preview: Nintendo Switch Hands-On: UI, Size, Mii Maker, Micro SD Cards And More
No d-pad no sell, Nintendo
I keep playing on my lovely 3DS, where 2D games still are playable.
(..and yes.. I know the pro-controller has a d-pad, but it's not a real option for a portable gamer like myself )
Re: Poll: Does Nintendo Switch Need Streaming Apps and a Web Browser, Or Is It All About Games?
@3MonthBeef
"All tablets can play games but not all tablets are literally built with gaming in mind."
Exactly. Switch could be the "gaming" oriented tablet, while the others are more multi purpose oriented, and also provide productivity apps.
"Gaming" could be Nintendo's little niche in the tablet market, but they still need the most important core apps of a tablet, to make this happen.
Re: Poll: Does Nintendo Switch Need Streaming Apps and a Web Browser, Or Is It All About Games?
@CircuitWrangler3
Re: Poll: Does Nintendo Switch Need Streaming Apps and a Web Browser, Or Is It All About Games?
@3MonthBeef
Re: Poll: Does Nintendo Switch Need Streaming Apps and a Web Browser, Or Is It All About Games?
Nintendo should also think about next time "Soccer-mom" is looking for a new tablet device for her kids. If the Switch offered similar functionality and apps like an iPad, then it could be a real alternative. This is not the case right now.
And it is very important for Nintendo to influence the new young generation of gamers. It's how we all became fans in the first place. Right now, Apple and Google are the company's that is influencing young gamers. This is not good for Nintendo in the long run.
Re: Poll: Does Nintendo Switch Need Streaming Apps and a Web Browser, Or Is It All About Games?
Re: Nintendo Switch Lacks A Web Browser Because It's A "Dedicated Video Game Platform"
Re: Feature: Nintendo Switch Countdown - Considering the Joy-Con

Re: Official Financial Results Q&A Clarifies Kimishima's "3DS Successor" Comment
@Mogster
You know... some times they properly really don't know them selves???
Re: Feature: Reflecting on Time Spent With the Nintendo Switch
To much praise given to those joy-cons. They do not have a proper d-pad, and is therefore a disaster in my eyes.
"Hey buddy, let's play two player on the go shall we?".
"Cool year. Those joy-cons look neat. What two player games do you have?"
"Street Fighter 2 and Contra... Oh never mind then!"
It would be so fantastic, if Nintendo released Joy-con d-pad versions, with no analog stick at all, but the d-pad in the proper spot where it belongs. That would be very pleasant to play 2d games with
Re: Video: Fresh Shovel Knight: Specter Of Torment Footage Stalks The Earth
@SwitchFanatic
Hope you also bought a pro controller then???
Games like this will be unplayable with the joy-cons without proper d-pad. Like so many other 2d games. It's a disaster
No Shovel Knight on the go then. Better to play this on a 3DS.
Re: Guide: The Best Nintendo Switch Accessories
@NEStalgia
The charger is not using any USB input at all. It just have USB-C out. The cord is permanent attached to the charger.
My OnePlus3 phone with USB-C interface came with a USB-A charger, and USB-A to USB-C cable. It works fine.
I think it's quite normal, and most people still also have a USB-A charger or Powerbank laying around.
Of course, USB-C to USB-C is preferable, because of the faster charging time.
Re: Guide: The Best Nintendo Switch Accessories
I think that I will cancel my pre-order
I am mostly a portable gamer, and not having a proper d-pad on the go, is a real letdown for me.
I love 2d games and VC classic games, but think they are unplayable without a great d-pad.
I was hoping that the Switch could be a real alternative for my 3DS, but that will not happen before Nintendo releases a joy-con with d-pad. I hope it will happen one day, because I like almost everything else about the Switch.
Re: Talking Point: Important Features Yet to be Revealed for the Nintendo Switch
@audiobrainiac
No, I don't think so . But I am not sure.
Re: Talking Point: Important Features Yet to be Revealed for the Nintendo Switch
Re: Talking Point: Is the Nintendo Switch a Handheld or Console? Does it Matter?
@gatorboi352
Re: Nintendo Switch Won't Have Video Streaming Services At Launch, But They're Being Considered
"Look mom, it plays Netflix too !!!"
Re: Ubisoft Confident Switch Can Be A "Bridge" Between Home Consoles And Mobile
@retro_player_22
Then I will be a happy portable gamer
Re: Ubisoft Confident Switch Can Be A "Bridge" Between Home Consoles And Mobile
@Pazuzu666
Year.. I thought the same.
I really hope that Nintendo releases a special d-pad joy-con soon.
I actually hope they release all kind of joy-cons for different play-styles. It would make sense.
Re: Talking Point: Considering the Paid Online Service for the Nintendo Switch
It's all about the pricing, and we don't know anything about that yet.
Nintendo doesn't have to offer anything extra , if it costs around 2-3 $ a month, and gives us a stable and reliable service. It must be much better than what we got for free on the Wii U, though.
Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Switch Plan is Starting to Take Shape
@Yorumi
Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Switch Plan is Starting to Take Shape
@Yorumi
Maybe that is the reason why it ran so awful on Wii U, and where free?
Does Xbox Live work the same way? And maybe Nintendo is switching to similar expensive infrastructure solution, to provide the same kind of reliable service? That would explain the added cost.
Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Switch Plan is Starting to Take Shape
@Yorumi
I actually think that Nintendo, MS and Sony is hosting everything by them selves. Providing the developers with the needed infrastructure.
Or else they can't provide a guaranteed and reliable service for all their games. And they could not make them run online for so many years.
I do not think that 3rd party's have that kind of access to those services?
Steam does not guarantee anything in that regard, I think?
Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Switch Plan is Starting to Take Shape
@Enigk
Well, it all comes down to pricing, right? Witch we don't know yet.
Would you pay 2$ a month for a reliable and stable online service?
Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Switch Plan is Starting to Take Shape
@Yorumi
I found this
"The servers available to games on Steam are usually hosted and ran by 3rd party companies and have little to no affiliation with steam, other than the fact that they are being tracked by valve.
Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Switch Plan is Starting to Take Shape
@Yorumi
But all your examples could also mean that server infrastructure does matter, and that it isn't all about p2p.
Also, I do not think that a little indie game attracts that many players? This would be easier to support and keep stable.
And why would EA have problems like this, if it's so easy and only a matter of p2p? That doesn't make sense at all?
Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Switch Plan is Starting to Take Shape
@Yorumi
