Re: Random: Why Pikachu Is No Longer As Chubby As It Once Was

Elvie

The reason why Pikachu became skinny was to highlight his growth with Ash in the series. When the series first started out, Pikachu was reluctant to participate in Pokemon battles. Gradually, Ash's bond to Pikachu inspired him to become stronger which resulted in him becoming Ash's closest ally and more willing to be involved in human affairs. It is another example of the Pokemon anime being the best work of fiction out there.

This notion of Pikachu being redesigned to make him more human-like and cute is just a lie fabricated by Game Freak for not coming up with this brilliant characterization.

Re: Bethesda Is Updating DOOM And DOOM II On Switch With Some Hellish Add-Ons

It is great to hear that they are adding options for brightness in Doom 64. That game was going for an atmospheric tone but sometimes it was too dark to deal with. The only thing that would make that port better is if they included bonus content that features the cut enemies for the game such as the Hellhound (such a thing isn't unheard of, Christian Whitehead made a Sega approved Sonic C.D. port with respectable bonus content.)

I'm also pleased to be able to play Doom W.A.D.s such as Sigil because I can't afford an original copy of Doom. I've been hearing mixed opinions of Sigil but, in my book, it is basically canon since it has Romero attached and warrants a look.

Funny that this report comes along only a week after I finished classic Doom.

@Quarth I know this is out of nowhere and I don't mean to self-advertise but since we are on the subject of Smash, check out this stage I made if you can. I'm pretty sure you'll appreciate it.

The European box art has the characters fighting but not reacting to attacks landing which makes it looks weird while the Japanese box art doesn't feature any fighting at all plus Fox looks like a strange cat.

The American version has its faults (texts and borders obscuring the art) but I think it gets the job done by conveying this a game where Nintendo characters fight each other while being mildly pleasing to look at.

It kind of sucks when you get overruled by senior staff members but maybe there was some benefit to V.R. not taking off in the '90s.

It's too bad that Yokoi didn't take a second look at their tech but I understand not wanting to throw away something you invested your time on. Even though Virtual Boy was a failure, the Game Boy and Game & Watch line totally makes up for that blunder.

@Heavyarms55 Western societies generally don't realize the full capability of animation. As others have mentioned, animation is usually regarded as children's entertainment. When it isn't, its some adult sitcom or a low-brow parody of these children's cartoons.

I understand your frustration. We are past the days of Bob Clampett and now we have to deal with the cynical treatment of the medium by Hollywood and many others.

On a positive note, if you want to see something with 2D animation in the West that is very artistic and (mostly) free of juvenile humor, I suggest Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal.

I'm honestly a little surprised how this kid blew up into such a brand. I remember seeing a news report about him quite a bit ago on some morning show and I thought something along the lines of, "that sounds like innocent escapism".

My opinion changed, however, when I was checking out board games at a Walmart and I saw his face plastered on to a cheap toy set. That was when I realized he was basically being used for commercialization.
