The SNES version of this series is slightly better than this, but I still find myself coming back to this one more often. It's just more fun to me. This game plays faster, is a bit more linear (so you can focus on destruction) and has better boss fights, which I love in any game. I wish there was a game with nothing but 100 boss fights in a row. Turrican has always played as a mix of several games that came before it, and if you like Metriod more than Contra, I'd say the SNES version. If you fancy more shooting, then this is the one.
Fun game, with atmosphere coming out of every hole. I would take a full star off for the difficulty, except the production value is so high and the gameplay so tight that you will want to play the first level several times even if you can't pass it. There are a ton of other games to play that lack a true challenge, so it's not a bad thing at all to have such a hard game play so well.
This is a technically good schmup, but I found it feeling kind of generic and without personality. I really commend the power up system in this series though, it really lets you create a shooter that fits your play style without having to avoid picking up "certain" power ups.
I would recommend this to schmup fans seeking a new challenge, but only after you've played Gates of Thunder.
I downloaded this game after reading an article about people still playing this in competition, and it being such a great shooter. Well... I was left pretty uninterested after a few plays (deaths more like it) and don't see myself playing it too much more. Shooters really came into their own during the 16 bit era for me, and it's hard to recommend this when there are several shooters on the TG-16 that are better and more fun than this for only a 100 points more.
(I would note that I found the gameplay frustrating and that really affected my enjoyment of this game, but maybe I just suck... apparently it's some of the hardcore schmup fans life goal to see the credits run on this one).
This game is far from horrible, but as an obvious SF2 clone, it's lacking much of what made SF2 so great. The gameplay is quite simplistic, and animations are lacking a few frames and seem a bit quick. The character designs are fun though, and I like the special moves graphics being a bit more over the top than SF2.
The best thing I could say about this average game is that there's enough button mashing to it than even a noob can win a few rounds playing this one, making it fun to play against others while putting down some pints.
If this were a bag of chips (crisps), then SF2 would be an order of fries (chips). They are both good, but one is just better.
This is one of the first fighters, and still one of the best to me. It's like many of the first fighters that came out in that it's design stems from the brawlers that were before it (like Final Fight) and still has the structure of your choice of only a few fighters and a cliche story, and instead of levels it's just a string of boss fights. This is more like the first Street Fighter than it is like SF2. I love the single player of this game, it has a ton of style and great atmosphere, but if I had a friend over who wanted to play some matches I would rather play SF2 for VS.
This is a great game IMHO, and one of the best fighters from the time period. It's true that many of SNK's titles that followed this one bested it in many ways, but it is a very unique fighter in it's own right. Many people have said it doesn't compare to SF2, and I completely agree with that, but for the simple reason that they are vastly different. This fighter is more hardcore than SF2, and demands that you play at a bit of a slower pace, taking advantage of openings and using some strategy with the special bar. The games biggest fault is in the lack of a 1P vs CPU, given the fact that the enemy AI is already in place, it seems like a big oversight by the developers.
If I rated this game after an hour of play, I would agree with the 2/5, but having played this quite a lot, I would say it's a 5/5, giving SF2 the nudge for being more approachable and more balanced as a 2P game.
It's an average game in all it's parts, but it all comes together to be incredibly fun. Beer and pretzels game for sure, but we all love a pint and a fun mindless game sometimes
Before you plop down the points on this mediocre game, play SoR 1-3 and Final Fight First. After that, avoid this, because you will be bored stiff after 10 minutes after playing those far superior games.
Great game! Very inventive levels, you'll keep playing just to see what comes next. I can't wait to platform on the backs of brontosaurus again . This is the definition of an arcade game though, simple patterns designed to make you think "OOOOHHHH, I see where to strike from and not get hit next time, PLUNK".
I loved this game back in the day. It was a GREAT original alternative to SF2 and MK, and the many spin offs those generated. It has large sprites, and interesting characters with varied moves. Playing it now, while still loads of fun, it is almost too easy to counter some of the slower moves because you can see them coming from a mile away. Still, I would highly recommend this to 2D fighter fans as this was one of the better original fighters in a sea of SF2 clones.
This isn't a bad game, but SF2 is more balanced, and has tighter controls. AoF2 is kinda clunky compared. If you are strapped for points, I would say wait for the inevitable KoF sequels, or better yet Samurai Shodown.
Edit: This is still a recommended download IMHO for fighting fans.
This game seemed kinda random and I wasn't sure what was going on at first, but once you get it, it's a lot of fun. It's sort of an RTS, but seems a bit turn based once you get the hang of it. Not for everyone, as the review says, but if you like games like Military Madness then you'll probably like this. Good mix of attack and defense, as well as some resource managment. The only minus for me is that you can't skip the animations for the attacks. Not a big deal really, as the gameplay more than makes up for it.
I have been playing this type of game for ages, but sadly missed this series back in the day. If you like SRPG's, then do not hesitate a download. Now that I've finished it, I can't wait for the sequel to show up.
I love Super Mario World, but now having playing this import game, I have to say this easily rivals any platformer on the SNES. It may be because it's new to me, but regardless, this is one of the finest platformers on the VC.
Great Cute-em-up! one of the better schmups ever, and despite it's appearance, be prepared to start from the beginning a few times before you see the ending. Highly recommended!
I loved this game when it came out, it was like taking Gauntlet to the next level. Playing it now, I have to say it hasn't aged very well. I've only played it single player, and it's not a very good single player experience. Regrettably, this is one of my least favorite VC games.

Re: J.J. & Jeff
If there was a Japanese counterpart to Beavis and Butthead, this is it. I remember wanting to like this game so much, but it's almost unplayable.
Making farting sounds with your armpit is more fun than this game.

One of the best ever, download now.

This is a pretty good game. Like others have said, the TG16 did get a better version, and IMHO Ordyn is alot like this game, but a lot better.
