Put several hours into this so far, and it's a real joy to play. Enjoying the combat a lot, which I can't say with many RPGs lately. The graphics and sound are great, and the presentation is excellent. Becoming one of my favorite JRPGs I've played in a long time. My own slant would put this at a 9 or 10, and I actually had low expectations going in.
I preordered this and played it for about 2 hours last night. So far i would say a 7 is fair, but my own tilt is taking it to an 8 or 9. This game is everything i love about PS2 era japanese games.
The story is delightfully absurd. The cut scenes, characters and world really do a great job of bringing it all to life. Everything has that Level 5 polish to it.
The battles so far are a little easy, with sudden spikes every so often. I do like that it is not a hack and slash combo fest. There is a strategy to using tension to boost and attack, or cover and fire. You will feel like there is a choice to what you choose to do. Simply running in and hitting A will likely get you killed. Overall the fighting is fun so far.
The customization options are low 2 hrs in, but it has been introducing the concepts during that time. It looks to be very deep, and i'm looking forward to getting into it more.
As someone who mainly invested in the Wii U so far this gen, both physical copies of games and digital releases (both indie Wii U eShop games and retail), as well as heavily invested in the 3DS eShop releases, I hope they deliver something that doesn't feel like the change from the Wii to the Wii U.
I bought a ton of Virtual Console games, and even though I can still launch them from the Wii feature on the Wii U, the integration is inconvenient and clunky. I hope the NX has better legacy purchase support.
@warvad I don't believe it is Nintendo's fault. Limited editions are usually not mass produced. Any company worth it's weight produces enough to provide demand. Scalpers come in and cicumvent demand by buying up those items. The only way Nintendo could counter this is producing twice the demand. The fault in actually in those that buy it. I could be wrong.
To put it in perspective, imagine a popular concert. If there's 1000 seats, and scalpers buy 300, the music venue was never going to sell over 1000 tickets. Is it their responsibility to sell 1300?
@paleboyjack I think you guys got it first, like last year.
Downloading DKC series now, I love this series, and something about the SNES versions just resonates with me. The sound, graphics and secrets. I love it. I can hear the dripping in the caves now.
Well, the scalpers won't get my money, but I refuse to shop at Wal-Mart anyways so no one was. This game will be available easily within a week, like most Nintendo games, even though I have a pre-order for the game at Amazon. So I'll get a Mario Amiibo ($12.99) and a can of gold semi-gloss Krylon ($3.99) and wah-lah! Limited edition. Or just rip the bloody thing off it's base and say it's "clear". And that, my friends, is how you #$%@ a stranger in the @$$ (scalper).
I got a chance to play this at a friends house, single player and co-op. It seems like a nicely made game, but I lost interest after a few levels. My personal slant would be that a 7 sounds fair, but I'd give it a 6.
I didn't read all the comments, so forgive me if it's been said, but I think a live action earthbound could work. Kinda like goonies meets the explorers.
I'm excited to see what the hypes about. I've played a few times now, twice with 4 players for an evening. It just felt like a chaotic mess to me. I am not ruling out that me and my friends just stink at this. Hopefully watching some actual good players will inspire me to give this more play time.
Mobile gaming is huge in japan. I think it has something to do with commuting and small living areas, but that's just what I heard, no facts to back that up. Makes sense the 3DS would be the king. I wonder how it's usage compares to phone and tablet gaming there.
I just can't seem to get into this for some reason. After LCU and Lego Marvel this seems a bit of a step backwards. After an hour of playing this, it inspired me and my kids to want to start new a new play through of LCU. We've been having a blast with that.
I've got about 30 hours into this now, and I have to say I've been enjoying my time with it. I've spent most of my time just exploring around and doing random things, which is pretty much what I like to do in any sandbox game. It's not as good as AC IV, but way better than AC III (I know these are pretty much different all around, but I mean in terms of sandbox).
@LordGeovanni I just had the same experience, there's even a legless Peach closing in an hour that is only up to $355.00
There's a bunch of questionable ones too, like a warped sword on Link.. My Target here has a whole rack of "rare" Links then. And the ones where they are just a broken figure don't seem as collectible to me.
This is going to date me.. but when I was 3 or 4 we got the Magnavox Odyssey. All we had for it as the pack in game Haunted House. It had this plastic overlay for the TV screen, and was extremely basic, but started me on a great life playing video games. My parents must have been unimpressed as we never got any other games for the system, and our next player was Pong. Pretty amazing how far things have come. I'm glad he got to see what his experiments and inventions led to. Thanks Mr. Baer!
