Fun fact, the Super Nintendo’s slow CPU was a concern raised by journalists from the outset. Nintendo claimed it was slower because the SNES was going to be backwards compatible with the NES.
@8bit-Man kinda feels like moving the goalposts. You are correct the percentage of discretionary spending an average person has, has decreased. But it doesn’t change the fact that gaming has gotten cheaper over the years as it has become more mainstream and the same can be said for electronics as a whole
@8bit-Man that doesn’t take inflation into account. Per the first calculator I could find in Google, $200 for the NES in 1984 is equivalent to $614 today. So it’s actually cheaper
1. Sega’s modern library is not nearly as compelling as they think it is. Unless they plan to repackage Genesis/Mega Drive games for the umpteenth time yet again.
2. Every non-PC gaming subscription service has failed if not launched by the platform holder. EA play was such a disaster it became a throw in for Xbox Game Pass. Same for whatever Ubi’s subscription is.
It doesn’t work because very, very few companies have the breadth of content to get gamers to open their wallets. A variety is required that needs others on board and that doesn’t happen if you’re not the platform holder
What a fascinating read. One thing I’d like to add is that Nintendo and HAL were close from the start. The relationship was driven by the groups understanding of the VIC-20’s 6502 chip. Extremely similar to the chip in the NES. HAL was brought on almost as a support team for Nintendo to help get many of their earliest NES games out the door while Nintendo was still coming to grips with the hardware completely.
I want to see the Switch outsell the PS2, but an update is badly needed. Graphically, games Nintendo makes look great, but as more studios stop releasing things for PS4 and Xbox One, the Switch will stop getting ports. It won’t be the success needed with just Nintendo and indie games at the helm. That’s the Wii U all over again
@ear_wig I barely played it, but isn’t that Mega Man ZX? I distinctly remember the connecting routes between different biomes. Give it a shot if you haven’t played it
While I love both the NA and JP art, I went with the clean look of Japan. America’s is more dynamic, but it bugs me that both Phoenix and the logo are pointing.
I’d say the GC-PS2 comparison really is a once in a lifetime situation. Nintendo spotted Sony a full years head start with the PS2. Combine that with the overall marketplaces shift from VHS to DVD and the fact the PS2 was the cheapest DVD player you could buy at the time buried the GameCube before launch day
I don’t think cheaping out on hardware was the issue with the 3DS. It was a combination of a high price (only $50 less than the home console) and lack of compelling software. In all honesty, the 3DS is probably a better system than the DS, but could never reach those sales highs due to a changing market. Dedicated portables began to be replaced by smartphones, especially amongst the most casual fans
In todays climate for sure. I was speaking back when the Wii was around. The GameCube didn’t fail due to lack of power or innovation. The GameCube failed due to Nintendo’s protectionist policies (tiny disc format they could control) and an awful image problem.
As a portable in todays market, they can’t compete Spec for spec with the XSX and PS5, but valve is showing there is plenty of room for performance improvement and a reasonable price, regardless of how the steam deck actually sells
Looking back, clearly SK and F5 made a mistake jumping ship. I don’t think their reasoning was flawed, but I do think they took what Nintendo brought to the table in the relationship for granted. Nintendo’s understanding of what makes a game fun is extremely unique and undoubtedly they would not have gotten so far with a stale idea under Nintendo’s guidance.
As for MP3 or Recore, obviously one is a better game, but working for yourself is a true reward in itself. Armature is Matthews baby. And as long as they’re getting work, they’re hanging on. I can imagine there are a bunch of ideas in the world that just need some funding to get off the ground. Transitioning roles can be challenging and rewarding all at once
I don’t understand why it has to be “either or” with Nintendo. Powerful hardware and innovative controls aren’t mutually exclusive. And it’s not like the motion tech was cutting edge when it was in the Wii anyhow. Nintendo needs to give us both again. No one complained of the SNES being too powerful and it won the generation while also being home to hardware innovations and multiple GOAT-worthy titles
NFTs are complete scams and i cannot wait for them to burn out.
That being said, the only way I can see them being used in EA games is for Ultimate team. Basically make the cards more “real”. Only a set number of Messi’s out there. Better pony up if you want one. But that doesn’t seem to benefit EA. If all the Messi’s have been claimed, demand should surely go down. Assuming all the Messi’s can be claimed that is
Yo dawg! I heard you like carrying cases. So we gave you a carrying case for your carrying case so you can carry your case while you're carrying your case
@boxyguy IIRC, Rare wanted a huge amount for controlling interest in the company. It was a big risk too, considering the Stamper brothers wanted to cash out. Without their leadership, it was unclear what the company would look like. Whether they would have the same direction and freedom they had during their partnership with Nintendo.
Nothing Rare released at Nintendo shipped on time, but they always released something memorable. Under MS, I feel output increased but creativity and quality dipped significantly. Glad to see them out of the Kinect doghouse and doing interesting projects again
@T317 I don’t doubt it would’ve been a great GameCube game. The problem was everything going on behind the scenes. The title was rushed out to be completed before Microsoft’s purchase of Rare. If that doesn’t happen, it would’ve had more time in the oven
“Miyamoto-san said from the start of the project—"It's fine without a story, so do we really need one?"

Surprised this actually happened. Yes, it always seemed like a match made in heaven, but LEGO licensing issues kept this from happening sooner. Basically for any licensed LEGO set, LEGO would own the game rights to a LEGO-fied version of the property. With as close an eye Nintendo keeps on its meal ticket, it was a sticking point that couldn’t be overcome in the past.
At full price, game pass is $10/mo. That’s literally the price of 2 games a year, plus access to something like 200 other games you probably wouldn’t have tried otherwise. Game pass is the best value in gaming. All MS games are on there day 1 and they’re always rotating games in and out. Enjoying MGS V right now
@NEStalgia Fair enough there. I just love the games industry and want to see it flourish. It pains me that Nintendo didn't squash these 2K policies once word got out about them to protect the experience of the consumer. We've seen devs abandon Nintendo before, they don't come back easily and 2K is a large dev. A key dev in the long term success of the system. For the first time since the cube we're getting full featured games on par with and at the same time as Xbox and PlayStation. That's insane. That's wonderful. That needs to continue. So yeah, the policy is garbage, but I've never played LA Noire. I haven't played NBA 2K in years. I'll pick up both as they're great games and hope Nintendo amends the policy on their end.
Appreciate the constructive dialogue. This is why I keep coming back to nintendolife
Also, shame on anyone here wishing for these games to fail. The more games on the system the more broad the user base. The more games on the system the more jobs in the industry.
Don't wish for people to lose their jobs and don't wish for the Switch to get less games
It really bugs me that people are pointing the finger at 2K here when the true and honest blame belongs to Nintendo. These downloads are gettin out of hand and it's up to Nintendo to provide as smooth a platform as possible for devs to port their games over.
Nintendo needs to open up the wallet and offer uniform pricing for cards up to 32gb. Will it affect their bottom line? Absolutely. But it will ensure a uniformed experience for the end user. That should be the goal. Bigger than 32gb, they should offer the uniform price for a set portion of the order. Split the cost of media with 3rd parties.
Nintendo, they want to support you, but it's hard when you tie their hands. We can't expect special treatment when we're less than 20% of the market with a more expensive storage medium

2. Every non-PC gaming subscription service has failed if not launched by the platform holder. EA play was such a disaster it became a throw in for Xbox Game Pass. Same for whatever Ubi’s subscription is.
