@Ulysses That's right, a new Kid Icarus Uprising 2 or a Switch 2 edition of the old 3DS title would have had a much bigger impact. With mouse controls it would play wonderfully and would also have been a nice showcase for the new console.
For me the best are: FFIV, FFVI, FFVII and Final Fantasy Tactics in no particular order, they are timeless classics!
I would rate any of them a 10/10 just for the epic storylines and beautiful soundtracks.
I wouldn't put F-Zero 99 so high, it does not deserve a third place in my opinion. Yeah, it's a nice and fun game afterall, and it is still the only "new" F-Zero we have right now, but I think any true F-Zero fan out there wouldn't want Nintendo to borrows that gameplay elements to a future game in the series.
F-Zero is all about speed, reflexes, ship control, driving ability and smart thinking about boost management. It's not about that chaotic mess, that super road and futile tricks. It's not Mario Kart.
As a fan I would want an F-Zero X/GX template with online multiplayer up to 30/40 players, totally based on player ability, as it should be.
@-wc- You are right. Yes, it's a new F-Zero with old 16-bit style, but it does not play like the original. There is a lack of speed, it controls a bit different and the chaotic gameplay elements (99 players filling a not so wide road) prevents a player from focusing on perfecting the drive style on tracks. It's more of an F-Zero carnival and should not be taken too seriously in my opinion.
I played it a bit, it's a fun game to pass time, but it's not absolutely a good F-Zero game. They could simply have made an F-Zero X (n64) with online multiplayer up to "n" concurrent players, but even in that case maybe "99" would have been too much.
Well, one thing is certain for me: there will be no Switch 2 presentation this year.
They have two options here:
A full reveal show in February '24, with release date set in April.
A full reveal show in June '24, with a release date set for October.
As for this September, it's Nintendo last chance to showcase new Switch games to appeal to as many people as possible and sell the current hardware. So yeah, there will be a Direct before the TGS.
it's the best Star Ocean in the series, with a great cast of characters, an intriguing story, action-based combat system, and an incredible soundtrack. It's a must for every rpg fan!
A SNES remake?
Possible Nintendo games I can think of are:
Pilot Wings (useless)
Star Fox (likely)
F-Zero (rumored, very likely)
Super Mario RPG (SquareEnix involved, unlikely)
Super Metroid (unnecessary)
Zelda Link to the Past (unnecessary)
Donkey Kong Country (unnecessary)
About the new 2D Mario game, hope to see a true new game in the spirit of Super Mario Bros 3 / Super Mario World. It could also be inspired to the movie, but it would be weird to make an adaption of a 3D film into a 2D game.
I think Nintendo only needs to follow the hybrid path, but with an expanded Switch 2 family of devices with enhanced hardware specs, in order to continue receiving ports from PS5, and backward compatibility with current Switch games.
I could imagine a new Switch 2 TV (home only, at full-power), the standard Switch 2 (Hybrid, mid to full-power when docked) and a Switch 2 Lite (portable only, mid-power).
The Switch 2 TV could be bundled with a pro-controller, the Hybrid with joy-cons and dock, and finally the Lite with its embedded gamepad (just like it is now).
Switch 2 TV and Switch 2 Lite would be the more affordable options ($229~$249), while the Hybrid going at full price ($299~$349).
@Xiovanni I don't know how exactly Nintendo could handle this situation itself, but I know there are blockchains specialized in storing files of any type (images, videos, audios etc) using a distributed system similar to bit-torrent, where NFTs can be linked permanently to some data, for example jpg files.
So there is already a way to link NFT property to specific data. Blockchains are evolving daily, with time they will cover even more use cases.
@Xiovanni It could seems the same thing, but actually it differs from a technical/legal point of view.
1) With current technology (centralized server owned by a company, for example Nintendo):
Pokemon "Pikachu" with ID:xyz is an asset embedded in the game Pokemon XY, asset is a property of Nintendo who grants rights to Xiovanni to use it in that game at Nintendo discretion, Copyright Nintendo.
2) With blockchain technology it becames:
Pokemon "Pikachu" with ID:xyz is an asset embedded in the game Pokemon XY, asset is property of Xiovanni, Copyright Nintendo.
So, being that Pikachu your property you can do with it, in the digital space, the same you can do with your jeans or favourite shoes in the real world.
@Xiovanni Because a blockchain, through the famous smartcontracts, acts as a notary and is able to certify 100% and forever the transfer of ownership of an object (an in-game item, for example) unequivocally. This is thanks to distributed, decentralized, immutable, public registers of which no one (nation, government or other entity) has direct control. See it as a sovereign, global, public domain registry.
It's a good point, Mr. Reggie! He understand what the potential use of blockchains and NFTs can bring to the videogame industry, he just have a vision that 95% of people (and gamers, mostly) simply don't have at the moment.
There are great advantages and potential in "play to earn" and "play to own" models, people don't understand this because it's a complex argument that also requires a vision of the future, but in my opinion it's a step forward for the digital space, especially for videogames.
There will be no "play to own" VS "play for fun", it will be a "play for fun" that just rewards the player with things (NFTs, tokens) you actually own and eventually, after you finish a game, can share or sell them to other players.
This situation reminds me of 2006-2008 when very few people thought digital keyboards would replace physical keyboards on phones/smartphones. Why? Touch keyboards won't work, it's not as easy, it won't be precise, it will took a lot of screen space etc etc. The same could be said about digital App Stores, Social Networks and so on!
.. Considering that a Metroid Prime Trilogy has been already rumored for quite some time (and by this time, it should be ready), and that Nintendo could easily remaster Star Fox Zero for Switch by itself.. the only one left is Kid Icarus.
Sakurai said, some time ago, that a port from 3DS to Switch could be quite demanding in terms of development resources, so it could be the only one game needing to be outsourced to a third-party developer for remastering in HD.
Web 3.0 is coming!
And, personally, I hope it will wipe out most of web 2.0 common issues: excessive centralization, lack of control on users personal data, lack of ownership of users generated content, absolute absence of anonymity, advertisments spammed anywhere, digital wallets fully controlled by banks.
It will be revolutionary just as the original vision of the internet/web was meant to be.
The only company that could be interesting to buy for Nintendo is Konami: It's a japanese company, with tons of games historically bound to Nintendo consoles: Castlevania, Contra, Ganbare Goemon.
With a bit of irony: Nintendo, you just need to release a new Super Mario Bros in which every coin collected in game is an NFT, then let us spend those coins to have discount on merchandising and games in the eShop! At that point, everyone would love NFTs
Seriously, NFT is just technology, it's not good or bad, it only depends on what is used for.
From what I see, it's just a generic realistic world with Sonic in it... It doesn't look and feel like a Sonic game, it's so generic with no style that you could switch Sonic with any other fantasy characters without noticing any difference. That's a shame.
Where are Green Hills? Holy cow, Sonic is a cartoony character!
Sega, just look at Super Mario Odyssey and learn from it!
Zelda II worst Zelda game? I'm shocked.
It's one of the best NES games, having a great influence on sooo many games that came after it, even as of today.
Zelda II is not a traditional Zelda game but in "spirit" it is it a lot.
It's a game in which you are given no clues, you don't know where to go, what items you need and where to find them. Yet it is a game very based on adventure, discovery and solving mysteries scattered in a vast semi-open unmerciful world.
We can think of it as an 80s NES 2D Breath of the Wild.
@Danrenfroe2016 sure, you own nothing physically but at least you own the digital version of that asset.
Let's say, at some point, Nintendo releases a collection of NES roms as NFTs, 1000x copies each. I buy an original NFT copy of Super Mario Bros ROM, complete with original box art and instructions booklet.
Now I own that rom indefinitely so I could legally play it with any emulator/platform that correctly check my ownership of that asset. I have the right to resell it and moreover, Nintendo won't be able to sell it again to me (for example on the next gen Switch) because I already own it.
@Shadowkiller97 That's possible because NFTs use standard blockchain technology. So, if for example the NFT is released on the Ethereum blockchain it will exist as long as Ethereum exists.
Since you own that NFT you have granted digital rights to it and you can use or resell it in the way you like. In the example above about Magic game cards, even if the company ceases to release an App to play with those cards, you or any other developers could legally create another App to view your collected cards and play with them.
@link3710 yeah that could be a really big problem. Fortunately, it seems that new generation blockchains have already resolved this issue by using a "proof of stake" validation mechanism instead of the old "proof of work" used by Bitcoin and Ethereum (bitcoin is quite old these days, it is dated back to 2008).
NFTs are not a bad things per se. It's just technology, it may be a good thing or a bad one.. it just depends on how it is implemented.

If the company shut down the servers, release a new not compatible App or go bankruptcy you lose everything you bought.
But if those cards were bought by you as NFTs, you can own them forever indefinitely. You can trade or sell them as you like on any platforms, you can play them in any third-party or unofficial app today or in 20 years from now.
And this thanks to a decentralized sovereign authority that is a blockchain.
@NEStalgia I would not see this as a gambling because you do not risk your own money. Let's say you buy the next Street Fighter or Tekken at the regular price, you enjoy it offline and make practice. Then you have the possibility to get a revenue if you are good at it by ranking in the online tournaments and earning crypto-tokens. Enjoyment and earning at the same time does not seem too bad to me. I agree with you on the legal implications.
I don't know how in the future "blockchain" gaming will be implemented or for what types of game will be a good thing but I think for competitive multi-player based games (such as Fortnite, Doom, CoD etc) could be really revolutionary.

Just think of a future Fortnite style game where players just get paid based on their ranking, winning true money in reaching a top position in the leaderboard or in a tournament. Now apply this to games you like.. Street Fighter, Tetris 99, Pac-Man 99, FIFA or any other VS game.

However, if it ever happens, that will be the day I quit playing video games.
