@Dan420 This, I think it`s still way too unclear how the "backwards compability" really works and we need (nearly) "compelte" lists of all the games and their respective performance on the new system.
@DanElectrode I made the transfer to OLED at my local GAME STOP (with the help of an enthusiastic employee), took about 60 minutes (but the store was empty).
1985, when the NES launched, a really lousy VHS recorder did cost twice as much as a really good BLU RAY recorder today. Movies on BLU RAY cost about a tenth what VHS tapes used to cost, and the quality of VHS was awful. I don`t understand why fans of videogames never draw these comparisons. Most movies are more expensive to produce than most videogames. Ask SONY. And does anyone remember old PCs and their prices? Why are videogames the only medium that`s getting more and more expensive though its audience GROWS and despite techical evolution?
An interesting first party game probably would have helped (this short hike/AC/overcooked-hybrid looks nice, DK seems to be fun and MK is always solid, - but the direct lacked a BOTW- moment in spite of all the frustration).
@RiasGremory I live in Europe, we have to pay the highest price for the switch2, although there are no problems of any kind between the EU and Japan. The collapse of the post war economy has lots of ripple effects and creates an atmosphere of doom (not the game). I was critized by friends for even mention switch2 during small talk.
Maybe it`s kind of karma: With the switch (other consoles weren`t available at the beginning of the pandemic) and ANIMAL CROSSING Nintendo was at the right place at the right time. With the direct at the nightmarish and absurd "liberation day" it was the opposite. Switch2 is tarnished (even as a fan I can`t separate the dissapointment about memory cards from the trade wars). They should have postponed the direct.
First: Hey, I can play Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077 on my switch! Then: A 500 Euro -console I don`t own will be able to play Elden Ring and Cyberpunk for about 80 Euro each by key cards. First: Hey, I can play all my old switch games on my new switch! Then: A 500 Euro. console I don`t own can probably emulate most of my switch games. First: Wow, that`s a fine display! Then: A 500 Euro console I don`t own looks almost as good (graphic wise) as my OLED- switch (and can probably run some interesting games from the last years nearly as good as other consoles -for a higher price per game).
I don`t tink we`ve beeen spoiled when it comes to the price of games and I don`t think Nintendo`s pricing reeks of overconfidence, on the contrary. Most people don`t own a console or a gaming pc, these days. They`re fine with their mobiles and their notebooks. The snes, playstation 1 and 2, wii and switch were consoles for everyone, the rest has been "for the players" (remember this slogan?). Most people would like to have games that last about 15 hours (or forever, look at Tetris, Move the box and the likes) for a reasonable price. Movies have been that expensive in production for decades and don`t cost a fortune to watch and own. Nintendo goes after the "players", i.e.: harcore-gamers, for the first time. They know that the families and casual games they used to target won`t afford a new console.
1. ELECTROPLANKTON!!!! It`s a piece of art! It`s a piece of music! It`s evolution! It`s a waste of time! An absolute gem, probably my favourite game of all time. Makes you smarter (in a weird way) and more relaxed (in a really weird way) with each aimless minute you spend with it. 2. Hotel Dusk 3. Rhythm Paradise 4. Zelda: Spirit Tracks 5.Elite Beat Agents
I`ve been playing it for 3 hours now. I love the fully and subtle orchestrated new versions of the old hooks and tunes! The game reminds me a lot of the pseudo- Zelda YONO and the first PAPER MARIO, but it`s ZELDA, no doubt, and one of the best!
I absolutely agree with everything concerning "Link`s Awakening". It´s simply not that mind blowing anymore after, a.o., "Shadow of the Colossus", "Braid" and "Undertale". It´s not only graphics that don`t always age that well. And "OoT" is still a great game, but THAT Hyrule is TOO SMALL. But the worst offenders are the old, brillant Point and Click- adventures by Lucas Arts, IMHO. I wouldn`t try combinations of commandos for hours to get to watch five minutes of a funny cartoon anymore. It`s a pity.
When I play "Viewtiful Joe" on GC, that`s not a nostalgic experience- it`s just playing a great game the best possible way. Playing "Rhythm paradise" on a new 3ds on the other hand makes me feel like visiting the past - I`m not used to play with touch screen and stylus anymore. "Retro" is an experience that connects you with the past that lets you feel a Style/vibe of the past that we now consider as unique and timebound. A brand new pixel game can make you feel this way. F ZERO doesn`t have this appeal anymore, now that we have F ZERO 99 for the switch. Double screens used to feel "Retro" before the DS and could feel like current and relevant again if someone would use them for new hardware.
NO MORE HEROES 2 and the first LIFE IS STRANGE (minus the sequence with the bottles on the junkyard) had a perfect flow without dull or boring moments, IMHO. On the other side, I really admire PERSONA 5 (royal), but the length, the constant grinding and the elaborated bad jokes in the dialogues wouldn´t let me recommend the game to anyone I like.
I think, I am not the only one who totally lost any interest in TOTK relatively early in the game (and who usually hides the deep and hurting disapointment) and who wouldn`t recommend it to anyone (while BOTW had/has great word of mouth).
Persona 5 (royal): The battle against Shadow Okumura (?). Nothing prepares you for it (except the www), and quickly after you`ve won, you have to make a crucial decision before you can save. Simply smashing "A" just to get to the next save option destroys your whole game (btdt).
"The Lost Levels" is very, very hard (and I`ve never finished it). But the weird interplay between camera, physics and controls in "Sunshine" PLUS the varying difficulty and rythm makes you question your sanity (I played "Sanity`s Requiem" at the same time, I know which of these two games to fear).
For me it was quite the opposite: had I known about the prominence of ultrahand et al, I wouldn`t have pre-ordered TOTK. Next time I`m eager to play a game on first day, I`ll better miss out and wait whether it`s about crafting and an old map.
1. A new ANIMAL CROSSING with more online - functions. AC was the breakout - game during the pandemic and holds a special place in many newer Nintendo - Fans (not us, mostly). 2. A POKEMON in the style of ARCEUS. 4K, 60p, larger world, no pop ups, better story, maybe a little bit on the darker side. 3. Something darker to bring the hardcore - gamers back, maybe by an estrangend third party which used to be friends with Nintento. Maybe even something along the lines of a new ELDER SCROLLS or PERSONA (unlikely, but you know what I mean).
!!! These (maybe plus The Minish Cap) are kind of default/basic/comfort food - Zelda. I used to be at the same time dissapointed that the Oracles were like imitaitons of Links Awakening without a comparable plot and thrilled, that they refined the game mechanics, had new ideas and were a bit breezier and more simple fun than LA.
Good work!!! I`d always thought that Zelda had a very definite core, but to really experience it that way was amazing (but why is all of this that moving? Great!)
I love BOTW, but for all its beauty it`s by far the most bleak, brutal, plotless and repetitive Zelda. I miss twists and surprising otherworlds and lovable eccentrics and a sense of coherence (yes, the divine beasts are dungeons, but without any brillance). Everything is hard work in BOTW, almost everything is war. The joy of wartching pieces falling into places, of paths which are suddenly accessible is lacking, the satisfaction of mastering a fairy tale with a strange sense of meaning and magic.
Strange - I´d like to play it right now, I will preorder it, etc.- but: no goosebumps, no tears (of the kingdom or otherwise) in my eyes, no Zelda - feeling.
Where is A MUSICAL STORY?? It`s the epitome of "groovy", the (simple) story without any dialogue is extremely well done, the style (a hommage to 70ies posters and animation) is great, it has beuatiful tunes (okay, only one, but if you like the different rock instruments, the variant arrangements are like a whole world) and in no other game you are that deep down in to the beat (brothers and sisters).
@d0nkeyk0ng_jR
Maybe we`re all anticipating that the next Zelda a) will come (relatively) soon, b) will probably be a lot like Ocarina (you gave us this world, now give us a story)!
And, of course, it`s great comfort -food for dark times (Britta is at least considering a blue streak, and I can`t sleep because of Covid).
Why are so many (including myself) playing Ocarina of Time at the moment? I like it a lot this time (didn`t notice before how good the 3ds- version really is), but it will never again be the one truly epic game it once was. On the switch I`m playing Neon White, although I´m way too slow for this game, and Lumines.
Eternal Darkness is a great game, but it would need a true remake - today, Lovecraft is everywhere, so the story is way too basic, the different characters aren`t characterized enough, unfair POVs are out of fashion, and, of course, the sanity system should simulate joycon - drift.
It`s the only 3D Zelda that doesn`t give me gaming motion sickness (except for some areas of BOTW), and at least the (great) beginning wouldn`t have worked with a "realistic" art style at all. I was totally convincend ( I had it preordered, in spite of my scepticism) after the first five minutes with their sense of space, fun and magic.
