Re: ICYMI: 12 Switch Games Will Receive Free Switch 2 Upgrades

TopazLink

I hope that means they've fixed the frame drops in Link's Awakening, they were really bugging me when I played it.

Age of Calamity could do with an upgrade too, probably all the Warriors games would benefit from more stable resolution and framerates!

Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memory has some frame drops as well, they're not terrible, but a little jarring on a couple of songs when trying to hit the notes on time.

Re: One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 Is Getting New DLC, Will Be Decided By Fan Votes

TopazLink

My only experience of One Piece is from Pirate Warriors 3, which I enjoyed! People more familiar will know just how much they had to cut from the story for the game though. I was a bit disappointed that you can't play as some of the characters that the CPU can control, especially after playing both Hyrule Warriors games.

I did buy Pirate Warriors 4 ages ago on sale too, when I didn't realise it was still getting new content. There's so much more DLC now and I haven't even started the game yet...

Re: Opinion: We Need More Couch Co-op RPGs

TopazLink

"The World Ends With You" on Switch has a co-op mode for combat. I enjoyed playing through the story again with my younger brother, that game is very special to me.

The sequel is great too, but doesn't have co-op, but I guess that's understandable with how they changed things. I bet they could've come up with a solution though, it would've been a lot of fun.

Re: Feature: Everything You Missed In The Switch 2 Mario Kart Reveal - Characters, Features, Easter Eggs

TopazLink

Pauline from day one, let's gooo!
Seeing those neat nods to older games, with the fonts and the kart designs is really cool. As well as more in-universe things like the Yoshi's burger joint.
Something I did wonder though is that if this is a launch title, will it be constantly updated with new content over the course of the system's lifespan?
If so, what the pricing structure would be.

Re: Catly Developer Says Game Does Not Use Generative AI, Blockchain Tech, Or NFTs

TopazLink

Their name doesn't exactly inspire confidence, but it doesn't look AI to me. I just feel like AI has poisoned people's minds, now whenever people see something they don't like, they just say "ew AI" and such, even if it clearly isn't. I could very well be wrong about this one, but it requires further investigation instead of knee-jerk reactions and just deciding to take one side or the other's word for it without proper evidence.

Re: Talking Point: What Are Your Top 5 Nintendo DS Games?

TopazLink

"The World Ends with You" is one of my favourite games of all time. The pin evolution mechanic though, if you want to 100% it, requires 2 DS's, I think? The Switch version having multiplayer was amazing, as it meant I got to experience the story all over again with my younger brother.

I wanna give a special shotout to games that might not get mentioned otherwise, like the Bomberland Touch games, had a lot of fun playing those with my sister alongside Mario Party DS.

As well as Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, my first ever KH game! Was always disappointed that it never got the "Re:" treatment later. Re:Coded also has really fun gameplay.

Re: Bayonetta Character Designer Celebrates Series' 15th Anniversary With New Art

TopazLink

3's story could've worked, if they actually put the story into the game. It's a baffling mess that needed to be made clearer and the tone of the cutscenes is all over the place.

Some long cutscenes that cannot be skipped because there's a button press or something part way through and they didn't break it up properly.

Severe lack of outfits, you'd think they would bring back all of them from 1&2 'cos of the story, but no.

The Handguns can't be upgraded, which means their moveset is much smaller than in 1&2. I'm also surprised they still haven't figured out a way to let you switch between more weapons on the fly.

I liked Viola as a character, but I didn't enjoy playing as her much. If they deleted her moveset and control layout and basically replaced it with Raiden's from MGR, with some tweaks, I would've been much happier.

Can't play as the other characters when replaying chapters and no playable Rosa. You know, I wish 2 let you play as Balder and Rodin when replaying story chapters, just have it auto-skip cutscenes or just leave them, it'd be funny.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles X Fans Are Once Again Discussing The Game's 'Censorship'

TopazLink

Not this again... I'm 30 years old, I'm well aware that women come in all shapes and sizes (as do men). Why did they even have a breast slider in the original Japanese version if it gets removed in every version after that? It's such an absurd thing to delete from a game, what purpose does that actually serve?

It's obviously not for inclusion, because removing an option is inherently exclusive. People are also attracted to all sorts of things, so it's irritating that breasts keep getting singled out, it's not a good precedent to be setting and unnecessarily demonises a large part of the population.

Re: Switch System Update 19.0.0 Is Apparently Causing Some Issues

TopazLink

Noticed recently that my Switch will turn itself off when it's supposedly at 30% battery in handheld. No warnings, no saying that the console battery is low, just suddenly the screen goes black with the low battery icon, then turns off.

I thought the battery was on its way out, or the system wasn't reporting the battery percentage properly, so maybe the battery was lower than what it was saying.

Re: Video: Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered "Monstrous Boss" Reveals

TopazLink

@wiiware Unfortunately, American McGee's Alice is owned by EA. They turned American McGee down when he tried so hard to get the third game (Alice Asylum) approved, even after he basically created an instruction manual on how to make it.

He then left the gaming industry altogether after that. They gave the lamest, most generic response too... If you haven't already, look up "Alice Asylum design bible".

Re: Random: It Looks Like Castlevania: Dawn Of Sorrow's 'Julius Mode' Is Even Harder On Switch

TopazLink

I heard about this on Steam. I wonder why it's different?

I also wonder if they'll address the errors in the text? If you watch a playthrough of the original DS versions, some of the text is different and now some lines have mistakes in them, what's that all about?

I haven't bought the collection yet, I'm waiting to see if the text gets patched, I would also like to see motion control options for some of the touchscreen stuff when playing docked.

Re: 'Castlevania Dominus Collection' Brings Three DS Classics To Switch Today

TopazLink

@ChromaticDracula Good to know that touchscreen stuff works in handheld mode! I wonder though if they could've added motion control for playing docked, seems like it might be awkward using an analogue stick controlled pointer for Sisters Mode and Albus, but we'll see.

I also have some answers of my own from Steam users, the Mina Doll is always there in Dawn of Sorrow and the Birthday Cake in Portrait of Ruin has been renamed "Sunday cake", presumably it appears in the shop every real-life sunday.

Re: 'Castlevania Dominus Collection' Brings Three DS Classics To Switch Today

TopazLink

Finally! But I need more information!

1. Sisters Mode in Portrait of Ruin, the original used the touchscreen for their attacks, what are they like to play as?
2. Albus in Order of Ecclesia, the original used the touchscreen to let him teleport around the screen with ease, how does that work now? Is it more cumbersome?
3. The "Birthday Cake" item in Portrait of Ruin, it was required to get all the items, but only appeared in Vincent's shop on your birthday, can you still get it somehow?
4. Mina Doll in Dawn of Sorrow, when playing Dawn of Sorrow on DS, with Aria of Sorrow in the GBA slot, a doll would appear in the background of Yoko's shop, is there a new way to trigger this?
5. Apparently for some reason they've rewritten or re-translated some lines? But they've introduced errors by doing so, both in the new lines and in lines that weren't changed. I've seen a screenshot that shows at least one double space where there wasn't one before.

Re: Review: Trinity Fusion (Switch) - A Roguelite Fusion Of Ideas That’s Worth Your Time

TopazLink

The demo for this game is a little broken.

I got to the part where I guess it expects you to die for the first time and I did, it played a cutscene but then crashed on the loading screen after that. I went back in and loaded the save, the file I made was there, but I guess it hadn't saved anything so I was back at the start. Skipped the opening cutscene dialog by mashing b, but then it crashed on the loading screen.

Opened the demo again, got past the loading screen but now the whole thing was broken, my health was some bugged value, and I could only move, block, jump and dash. Couldn't attack, enemies wouldn't attack me, couldn't use the healing item, couldn't enter the menu.

I closed the demo through the home menu and tried again, I had to start a new file to fix it.

Re: Hideki Kamiya Still Wants To Make Okami 2 And Viewtiful Joe 3

TopazLink

@Yalloo This is also gonna sound super negative, but know that it comes from a person that likes Bayonetta and wishes that it would be consistent and live up to its potential.

The story and character interactions are important to me and when that's done poorly it's a disservice to the characters and the world-building. There are fun things to like about the game, but it comes off as shallow and harder to like when the story is told so badly.

There's lore explanations for the story, but not for how the characters behave. They need to put more of the lore stuff into the actual story, because it's cool and interesting and would make things much clearer.

They also need to write the story in a way that respects the characters and how they would actually behave or it's just contrived nonsense where stuff is just allowed to happen when it shouldn't.

I don't wanna be mean, I just want it to be gooooood

Re: Hideki Kamiya Still Wants To Make Okami 2 And Viewtiful Joe 3

TopazLink

@Yalloo I have many things to say about Bayonetta, too much to fit here...

The story was the best in 1, it was told sincerely, had wild action without being stupid, and with interesting and consistent characters and lore.

2 felt like it wasted time with Jeanne's unnecessary "death", didn't explain properly what was happening or why, too rollercoastery in its level design, being teleported around the place. Only got really interesting when it was tying itself back into 1. I still like it as a game, but the story needed improving.

3 was a mess, not clear what was happening, the villain was a joke, bizarre and inconsistent tone. Witch Time doesn't work anymore. I liked Viola as a character but didn't like playing as her. Bewitchments this time didn't even unlock anything. There was fun stuff to do in it for sure so I don't want to be too negative, but they made a lot of odd decisions when making it.

Re: Hideki Kamiya Still Wants To Make Okami 2 And Viewtiful Joe 3

TopazLink

@xzacutor That didn't work for American McGee when he really wanted to make Alice: Asylum. He put in so much work to try and get that game made and EA just brushed him aside with a generic response.

I know these are different games and companies with different people involved, so maybe this idea could work, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Re: Developer M2 Wants To Bring More Games To The Switch

TopazLink

It would be cool to see the Castlevania Anniversary Collection updated with the rewind feature from the Advance Collection.

As well as the rest of the 2D Castlevania games please! The DS games, as well as SotN and Rondo (maybe even the 2.5D remake of Rondo from Dracula X Chronicles) are the most obvious, but the lesser known ones would be interesting to see too, even if they may have less selling power.

Legends
Chronicles
The Adventure Rebirth
Vampire Killer
Harmony of Despair
Order of Shadows
Grimoire of Souls

The 3D Castlevanias would be cool to see too, though I imagine those would be done by a different studio?

64
Legacy of Darkness
Lament of Innocence
Curse of Darkness
Judgement

As well as the Lords of Shadow games while we're at it

Re: Tomb Raider I-III Remastered And Lara Croft Collection Getting Physical Releases

TopazLink

@Spider-Kev It was just that I've seen that kind of thing a lot, taking the time to ask questions in comment sections on articles and youtube videos where there's no guarantee of anyone seeing the comment or replying and where the answer is easily and quickly findable with a simple search instead. Sorry if this sounds dismissive, it's just an observation I had

Re: Tomb Raider I-III Remastered And Lara Croft Collection Getting Physical Releases

TopazLink

@Spider-Kev You could look it up you know. These are the Classic Tomb Raiders 1,2 and 3. The ones originally made by Core Design in the '90s.

Eidos turned Core Design into a Tomb Raider factory after the success of the first one, which is why it collapsed. It's kinda sad really, you should try to find out about it. They never even sent Core the fan mail they received, for the longest time they had no idea just how much people loved their games, even if they had to be forced out every year.

Re: Rumoured 'Hi-Fi Rush' Switch Port In Doubt As Microsoft Culls Tango Gameworks And Other Studios

TopazLink

@Ogbert It's not propaganda, it's reality. I think what you're really against is people earning that money in an unethical way and also using it in an unethical way, which I completely agree with. Companies and individuals doing awful things and getting away with it. People giving themselves obscene bonuses while the general employees struggle to get by and all that.

There a people who do use the money they have for good causes, even the billionaires you revile. If they did earn that money fairly, would you still begrudge them of that? People do need something to strive for, an aspiration to improve. Taking all that money and distributing it "fairly" (whatever that means) is nigh on impossible. How would it work? I don't know.

That companies and some individuals can act with impunity, bossing around governments and regulations and affecting negative societal change is dispicable.

I don't know what to do to the current system to improve it other than actually holding people accountable for the awful things they've done and having proper methods to prevent such awful things in the first place.

It's lots of subtly different things interwoven and to try and unpick it and develop a better system may be necessary, but I don't think anyone knows what that actually looks like, despite what they claim.

Video games, music, all sorts of media and art and actions of people who want a better world can teach us that a positive outlook is important. It's hard to maintain with life and all the awful things happening, "but there's good in this world, Frodo, and it's worth fighting for".

When I start talking about things like that, I'm no longer talking about capitalism or any other kind of -ism. It may be cheesy, sure, but I want people to be hopeful, I don't want to leave them on a sour note, it's not propaganda for the world we have or the country I live in, or its systems, it's about understanding the power you do still have to make a positive impact on your own life and the lives of others.

I'm not a propagandist, or a politician, or an economist or anything like that, and I don't want things to stay as they are or get worse, I'm just some random guy in a comment section of a gaming article and did not expect to be having this conversation.

I come from a big, but definitely not a rich family. I left A-levels early because I realised it was a stupid decision in the first place and somehow now I'm 30, never had a job, still living with my mum and have done nothing with my life. A lot of that is on me and yadda yadda whatever else.

I don't know what to do, I'm not smart enough or have the time to try and fix everything myself, even if I wanna...

Re: Rumoured 'Hi-Fi Rush' Switch Port In Doubt As Microsoft Culls Tango Gameworks And Other Studios

TopazLink

@Ogbert Pure socialism doesn't work because people do not function in the way that it demands. It requires totalitarian control by government, do you really want that? I don't think you do. You'll own nothing, everything is mandated, how is that actually going to function in reality? How do you hold the government accountable? How do you have any relationship with any country that does not share that system? It may work on a tiny scale, but for how long? People have ambitions and desires, ideas and emotions and those will eventually win out and overthrow that kind of oppressive control.

People CAN go from nothing to something, and people can go from everything to nothing. Sometimes it's hard, sometimes it's easy, sometimes you get help, sometimes you don't, sometimes you're actively being worked against, sometimes you're your own worst enemy. Where you're born, what you look like, who you're born to, how much money you start with, how much you end up with, it's not always under your control, but it's also not always the be all and end all, no matter what anyone tells you.

Your life is the only thing you truly have in this whole universe, if you want to make it meaningful, you're the one who has to do it. You can affect change, you can hold people accountable, you can do great things and be rewarded, don't let people take that away from you. Fight the good fight, always strive for better.

I don't really know what I'm talking about right now, or how this applies to anything, but go out there and be the best you that you can be, I believe in you. But I'm tired and need to go to sleep.

Re: Rumoured 'Hi-Fi Rush' Switch Port In Doubt As Microsoft Culls Tango Gameworks And Other Studios

TopazLink

@Ogbert Unless I'm misunderstanding something, socialism inherently disvalues an individuals contribution because the work does not belong to you and you receive no potential benefit for a job well done. Resources and means of production are controlled entirely by the government (I'm sure that's never been a problem...), there's no competition, no incentive to do or be better. Everyone is supposedly seen as "equal", even if they're not. That last sentence is probably the only part that sounds remotely utopian, but I don't think it is and has it ever really worked like that in practice?

I don't really know much about political nonsense honestly, I just wish people wouldn't screw each other over. But apparently that's too hard for some people, no matter what system they claim to use.

Re: Rumoured 'Hi-Fi Rush' Switch Port In Doubt As Microsoft Culls Tango Gameworks And Other Studios

TopazLink

Capitalism works just fine, people should be paid for the job they do. It's corporatism that makes stuff like this happen. I don't know why you would completely shut down a studio with talented devs that made such a cool game, seems odd. I hope they land on their feet, at least they were saved from being turned into a support studio or sent into the sequel mines.

Tomb Raider was successful, so the publisher Eidos made Core Design make new Tomb Raiders every year. They didn't have the time or resources and many just wanted to make something else, that's why those games can be inconsistent and how Classic Tomb Raider died with Chronicles and Angel of Darkness. Then when the chance of Anniversary came around they chose Crystal Dynamics instead and even under them it's been rebooted twice. Then eventually getting the remasters of the first 3 old TRs, with all the discourse around the various studios involved in that too.

Eidos never even sent Core Design all the fan mail they received. Can you imagine... In those early days without direct contact with fans, not knowing how much of a positive impact you'd had on people's lives? It's heartbreaking.

Halo was successful and Microsoft wanted more and we all know how that turned out. Fallout going to Bethesda, Ubisoft consuming everything into Assassin's Creed, EA hollowing out everything it touches, Activision turning studios into Call of Duty factories.

Publishers getting a studio to push out more and more in worse conditions as well as the weirdness of getting different studios to make sequels/prequels, it's happened a lot with games and can happen in other media too, all because something new was successful once and now that's all they want.

Re: Lara Croft's Pinup Posters Go Missing In Tomb Raider I-III Remastered

TopazLink

@exit It's because people in their spare time can take as long as they like and do it specifically because they care.

Companies have to adhere to copyright and licensing while having other pitfalls like meddling execs and some members of dev teams that may be causing problems too. Marketing costs, development costs, the franchise in question might be in IP hell where it's not clear who really owns it or its just being sat on or not considered profitable.

Then there's the public perception too especially in the modern day with so much unnecessary outrage and bots and reporters of questionable integrity and the absurd way the news views some games stirring the pot...

You have a Stellar Blade icon, so I'm sure you're aware of the insane things people have said about that game too.

People flip-flopping on whether somthing is sexist, misogynist, the patriarchy, oppressive, setting us back or if it's empowering and liberating...

Lara Croft, Bayonetta, 2B, Dead or Alive, Skullgirls, Senran Kagura, Eve in Stellar Blade, Aphrodite in Hades, Pyra, Mythra or blades like Dahlia from Xenoblade 2 etc. etc. whenever a female character appears there's always someone raising a stink or saying some weird nonsense.

Then there's uncreative people and activists who keep insisting that they appear in games and other media. Like it's not about you, you are not the character, the character is not you, the character is not real. Make your own stuff with your own characters and stop co-opting other people's stuff.

There's also people who are just straight-up awful at writing and it baffles me how they keep getting jobs, if you were that bad at anything else you'd be out and ideally be stopped from doing it ever again until you prove you can do it.

Nepotism, corruption, corporate activism...

How many franchises need to die or become a meme before this constantly goalpost moving modern thing stops? Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, He-man, Willow, The Witcher TV series, Halo TV series, Rings of Power, the Game of Thrones later seasons, Robyn Hood, Indiana Jones, all of Marvel, the entire comic book industry, Dead or Alive, Skullgirls, Senran Kagura the list gets bigger every time something is announced.

There was a time where I would've wanted remakes of things like Knights of the Old Republic or Soul Reaver, but now I don't anyone going anywhere near them.

I just want games playable on modern hardware with all their extra content. DRM, online requirements for single player content, all this DLC, pre-order items, microtransactions, loot boxes, season passes, licensed content, platform-specific content makes it impossible.

Not to mention cloud games and phone games that get shut down, games that get delisted that you either can or can't download again, game licenses being revoked so it gets deleted from your library.

We could be here until the end of time trying to describe everything that's gone wrong with every piece of media, every piece of art, every artist or historical figure that's been tainted, defaced or forgotten.

Re: Lara Croft's Pinup Posters Go Missing In Tomb Raider I-III Remastered

TopazLink

I think generally the point here is that old media should be allowed to be presented in its original form (including things like licensed music/assets, but that's a whole other can of worms). Any other art and that kind of meddling shouldn't be tolerated, so why should it be ok with video games? It disrespects the original creators and this case also disrespects the work of the remaster devs by making them remove some of the work they put in to keep it consistent with the original. Pierre's jacket should not have been censored either, especially not in the original graphics mode and that was there day 1.

The medipacks are an interesting thing to point out too, in the originals they had the white circle and red cross in TR1, Unfinished Business and TR2. It was changed to a white circle and green cross in The Golden Mask and that was also used in TR3 and The Lost Artifact. The remaster however uses a different design in all the games and expansions, a green circle with a white cross.

I know this is due to the Red Cross not letting people use their logo. Halo 1 used white health packs with a red cross but after that the games used a red H because of that too. But Halo Anniversary (even the version in the Master Chief Collection) still uses the red cross when switching to classic graphics. So even that is inconsistently applied over time.

Some voice lines were also removed in the last patch on console. Lines from Lara's Home because Lara's original explanation of the controls don't quite match up with the actual controls.

There'll be other stuff that they've had to change too, stuff that people might not even notice or say that they don't care about or say "oh well, I guess they had to".

Where does it end? When is the original product no longer the original product? Video game preservation is already an absolute joke even without so-called "modern" sensibilities demanding things be altered no matter how small. It's embarrassing.

Re: New Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Update Finally Makes Keys Easier To Spot

TopazLink

It's still missing a lot of the photo mode poses from that unintentional EGS update. It's worth noting that they're calling this "Patch 1", so I hope they do continue to work on other things too.

I do very much want to know what Embracer and Saber's current situation means for this game though, and for TR4-6. As well as Legend/Anniversary/Underworld and the differences in content between platforms.

Re: Embracer Group Sells Saber Interactive For A Cool $247 Million

TopazLink

I would really really like clarity on what this means for Tomb Raider Remastered, future updates, and the probability of further remasters of at least the old Core Design games. An extension to that would also be the potential of Legend/Anniversary/Underworld to be released with all content from each version...

Re: Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night Is Getting Shantae Cosmetics

TopazLink

Are they ever gonna actually fix this game? The last time I tried to play a bit on my Miriam save was after the Child of Light update and the performance was utterly abysmal, constant stuttering and dropped inputs. Even worse than before that update.

In the past, the game has also crashed on me way too many times playing as Miriam and Bloodless in various boss rooms, and the Doppelganger boss always gets stuck in the wall. The game is just generally unpolished and any sort of loading, including opening the menu and talking to npcs, feels like the game is gonna crash.

It's pretty unforgivable, even if I still managed to beat the game as every character and get all the shards and items and such as Miriam. The game was still fun before the last patch, at least at times, even with poor performance and weird load times, but man they need to just throw in the towel and get someone else to do the Switch version for them, it's embarrassing.
