Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl #32 - Sonic The Hedgehog

Voted EU because I absolutely loathe the style of shading on the NA box art. There’s a rim of light around everything, even the stuff that shouldn’t have one. Sonic’s belly looks like a floating egg.

I was relieved to see that the voice acting has its own volume slider in the options. It plays just like a classic Mega Man, though I feel that the text and some consumables look too small in handheld mode. Really like how the time of day changes the further you go through Block Man’s stage. I had to take a moment to gaze at the night sky before entering the boss room. Can’t wait to play the full game.

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Thinks You Should Give Star Fox Zero Another Try

I got as used to the controls as I could, but that didn't mean I was having any fun. Length and control only scratch the surface of my problems with SF0. They shouldn't have modeled it do much after SF64. You can't help but compare the levels. Zoness used to be one of the most action-packed levels, now it's a nearly threat-free helicopter ride. Meteor was one of my favorites, now it's a hidden escort mission. And they have the gall to put it in the game twice. Then there's the fact that every last boss is in all-range. The final boss in the new Kirby was more satisfying than any boss in this game. Even the ending is literally SF64's ending, except with the Arwings in walker mode.

Miyamoto, I love ya. I've been playing your games since before the NES came out, if you count old ports of Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. But if you expect me to please try SF0 again, I'm gonna need you to try developing it some more. I appreciate that it's different, but it's inherently flawed. Using an outside camera during a dogfight is ridiculous. Am I supposed to believe that a fighter jet (fictional, I know) has a turret, but not a radar? That's all the second screen should have been, if you ask me. Just a means to free up the main screen of clutter, so it could be a beautiful return to the series. Instead, we get this multi-view thing that nobody asked for, which comes at the cost of graphics since the Wii U is now forced to render the game twice. (Sorry if that's blindingly inaccurate; that's as far as my technical understanding goes.)

Do you think it felt good to bring a first-party Nintendo game back to the store? I can't remember the last time I did that. Star Fox Adventures? I think this may be the Other M of the series.

@nab1 By definition, MN9 isn't a Mega Man game. It was supposed to be at best a 'spiritual successor,' and most people feel it didn't meet that claim. As an added bonus, all four MM games you mentioned have cutscenes in which the characters' mouths actually move.

@ricklongo If I had to guess, the level-based structure has a lot to do with the crowdfunded aspect of the game. Many of the levels in the game were stretch goals, and it seems like it would be easier to add a separate level than to expand a branching map.

Hopefully, this will give WayForward more chances to switch up the action. Sequences like that long slide would be harder to implement in a Metroid-like environment.

I think Insanity's Blade was being developed by a one or two-man team. Maybe the stress was too much, or it was a budget thing. It's a shame, because I really wanted to play that game as well. The main (or sole?) dev used to post here. Maybe we can summon him by invoking the game's title a third time in this thread.

Insanity's Blade.

@Konda
Besides hardware limitations (I've experienced slowdown even on the Wii U version in an exceptionally weapon-heavy run), I'm sure the presence of a second stick (or nub) is useful. The game just wouldn't be as enjoyable forced into a button-only control scheme for shooting. Even though you can only shoot in four directions (most of the time), using the stick just feels better.

Re: Review: Rock Zombie (Wii U eShop)

No co-op, no aerial attacks. These are cardinal sins for an arcade beat 'em up. 6/10 seems generous. In my mind, "so bad it's good" is limited to the Rushing Beat trilogy. Even indie games can be "so good they're good."

Re: Giana Sisters 2 In Development, Could Be Coming To Wii U As Early As Next Year

The original has the honor of being the first game that I've downloaded and deleted without finishing. It was a mediocre platformer at best, with eye-burning visuals. The only thing is had going for it was the whole world-switching mechanic, and even that was mostly cosmetic. Sure, it made a couple floating floors switch places, but altering the whole background did nothing, save for opening a few wells. If it was more thoughfully implemented, it could have been great. As it stands now, it's just a cheap hook.
