Did you know that some of the people who worked on the Bravely and Octopath series made a game for Apple Arcade? It almost slipped our minds, too! Until yesterday, in the Nintendo Direct, Various Daylife made a surprise appearance. Launching on the service back in 2019, this simplified RPG is now available to buy on the Switch eShop. Like, right now.
Curiously titled, just like a lot of other Square Enix games, Various Daylife was developed by DokiDoki Groove Works, the same studio behind other Square Enix mobile games such as Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, Valkyrie Anatomia: The Origin, as well as the adorable Switch game Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun. But many of the team behind some of Square Enix's popular turn-based RPGs also helped out, including Bravely series and Live A Live producer Tomoya Asano.

Battles change up the turn-based formula, and you'll need to prioritise teamwork using the Change, Chain, and Chance commands. Otherwise, this is intended to be a much more chilled experience than say, your Bravely Default II. In August, the game was removed from the Apple Arace service, and it looks like that may well have been to prepare for the console release.
For more information on the game, check out all of the details from Various Daylife's eShop listing:
An all-new 'Adventure X Daily Life' RPG from SQUARE ENIX, created by the development team that worked on OCTOPATH TRAVELER and BRAVELY DEFAULT.
■ Story
In the year 211 of the Imperial Era, a new continent was discovered. Explore its every last corner as a settler of Antoecia, while living your life to the fullest in the city of Erebia.■ Features
- Character growth through everyday work — VARIOUS DAYLIFE features over 20 job classes and more than 100 types of work for those jobs to perform. Since you’ll be able to increase your strength through physical labour or improve your magic with more mentally taxing tasks, you can shape your character how you see fit depending on your choice of work.- Overcome dungeons with skilled management — Choose what limited rations, items and camping gear you can pack in your bags as you leave the safety of the city to confront the unknown. You'll battle monsters, bad weather, and food spoilage out on the various frontiers of Antoecia. When the going gets tough, will you press onward, or retreat to explore another day? You’ll have to make these kinds of decisions as you trailblaze a way across the continent, where none have trod before.
- Innovative Battle System – The Three CHAs — Introducing a twist to the traditional job-and-ability, turn-based battle, with a unique system that relies heavily on working together with your allies. CHANGE your foes' conditions, build up a CHAIN of attacks and seize your CHANCE at inflicting heavy damage!
This isn't the only game that Asano and the team have been working on, however. Also announced during yesterday's Direct was Octopath Traveler II, a brand new HD-2D game for the Switch (as well as PC and PlayStation consoles). And that's not even counting how many other Square Enix games are coming to Switch over the course of the next year.

they've really gotta hire someone to come up with better names for these games, man
Has anyone played it yet?
who's coming up with these names needs to be fired
Square is really churning these out
@Ryu_Niiyama yeah, played a bit so far. You’ll want to work a tonne to level so that the battle missions don’t make you tear your hair out. So far it’s a management game between keeping your characters’ mood and stamina up while doing work, with bits of battling. This is, I think, at least an hour in so far.
I played this a bit on Apple Arcade and was bored to death and deleted it rather quickly.
A rose by any other name. Please Square, choose any other name.
This title tho, were they really that uninspired ?
The price is as weird as the name.
Heard this game was so-so, tbh.
There was a time I was really curious to try it at Apple Arcade. I'm glad I held back so I can give it a try now
@Mauzuri At least you can make a good sentence out of em.
I am an Octopath Traveler with a Triangle Strategy in my Various Daylife. Huh this sentence all of a sudden had me thinking of Splatoon for some reason.
Endless Dungeon is another one.
Do they try to make these sound generic on purpose?
I still happen to think Triangle Strategy is a good name.
Various Daylife, though? No. That feels like two words were drawn randomly out of a hat and stuck together.
Various Daylife even sounds like work. If I'm going solely off of just the title....it sounds like you just walk around doing odd normal jobs.
This looks like a dialed-back Darkest Dungeon. Is this like Darkest Dungeon?
Imagine if Chrono Trigger were called "Time Travelers" (and yes, I'm aware there's already a game with that name)
So the battle system is.. cha-cha-cha?
Octopath Traveler? Passable title, but hey, it does convey what the game is about well.
Triangle Strategy? Pretty basic, doesn’t say much of anything besides it being a strategy game, I guess, but again, it’ll do.
Various Daylife… what the f-
Chrono Trigger, Romancing SaGa, Live A Live, Bahamut Lagoon. Square has never ever been good at releasing titles that sound natural or tell you anything about the game.
Can't wait for "Interesting Role Play" next!
... Wun can only hope.
I had to read the headline three times and I still don’t understand it. Not NL fault. It’s a ridiculous set of words to have to put together
Huh? Never heard of this game before, just searched for it in apple arcade and I cant find it. Was it delisted?
@Dragwhite and a artist for the logo. I imagine this one will have the same thumbnail as the rest of the team's games.
This team seems to be making more and higher quality games for Switch (even if this one is a bit of a misfire) than all 3rd party support combined for N64. Almost, anyway.
I am awaiting "Tedious Grind", a super old school JRPG.
I really hope there is a review for Various Daylife. I really need more information on this one.
I played this and its kind of mediocre. I forgot the name of this one and was hoping it was Fantasian coming to switch instead.
hahaha
@Pak-Man Ehrgeiz, that one can't be found on any dictionary. Also Parasite of the Evening I mean Parasite Eve.
Square putting more titles on Switch reminds me of an ex who dumped you for a more stable partner only to see you years later that being unabashedly you, happy, and still doing well makes them regret leaving you and want to come back for a little more fun (written gender neutral because it happens both ways, duh).
I hope Apple also let Fantasian(the game made by Mistwalker= release on other platforms.
