2019 wasn't the best year for Sonic the Hedgehog, but it was still quite eventful. He made cameos in Cartoon Network shows, appeared in his own series of animations and his new game Team Sonic Racing was released on multiple platforms including the Nintendo Switch.
This year, however, is already shaping up to be something special. Next month, Sonic is appearing alongside James Marsden and Jim Carrey in his first live-action movie. According to a recent video tweet by Sega, there's even more planned for the fastest hedgehog after this. Take a look below:
While this might look like your average video, it's not. According to Sonic the Hedgehog's social media and PR head Aaron Webber, there are hidden messages within it. Fortunately, fans have already found them (thanks, @TailsChannel):
It began in 2015
A glimmer of a flame
Growing with each success
Enduring every challenge
Within this, my last puzzle
Remember the words
Ignis aurum probat [Latin for ‘Fire tests gold’]
This next chapter belongs to you
As pointed out by Siliconera, the next Sonic game is already in development. Apart from this, producer Takashi Iizuka has previously said the big year for Sega's hedgehog will be 2021 when he celebrates his 30th anniversary.
What are you expecting from Sonic in 2020? Tell us below.

A completely "new" Sonic Mania sequel .... i love sonic mania, but 90% were reused levels. just make a game with new levels / music till the new 3D Adventure will appear somewhen in 2021.
or new dlc for team sonic racing ;D
but whatever they're teasing here - GIVE IT TO ME ALREADY !!!!!!!
What happen to Sega Ages?
SM2 feels pretty inevitable given last year's Amy video. Fire tests gold - is that Blaze vs. Sonic?
That first line of "It began in 2015" has got to be referring to Sonic Mania. The only thing of Sonic significance that happened in 2015 (besides a couple forgettable mobile titles) was the BEGINNING of development for Mania. We're getting Mania 2, people!!!!
yeah i hope so .... guess, if there will be a new sonic game this year, maybe they'll release it during sonic's birthday (june) .... so if we're lucky, only 6 more months to go ;D
who knows, maybe in the next nintendo direct this or next month, we will see some gameplay footage ;D
Don't want to get my hopes up but at the same time, I kinda do!
@NinChocolate
Sonic 3 and Knuckles would keep me quiet until a new Sonic Mania turns up.
Mania 2 or bust.
@spoondriver Micheal Jackson's estate won't allow them to use the game, too much of a headache to get the rights.
My guess is that we will get something Mania-related this year. At this point, we just have to accept nothing big anymore from Modern Sonic or Adventure Sonic. I think Sega will play it very safe from now on with the brand.
The only Modern- / Adventure-related stuff we will see from Sonic are the new IDW-Comics, some animated shorts, and maybe some Mario & Sonic spinoff titles. But not more. Okay, maybe this new rumoured TV show could have something to do with Modern Sonic.
I loved the old levels that Mania revisited! The devs' creativity gave them really wonderful new twists to the layouts and mechanics. I mean, Mania's take on Green Hill and Chemical Zones - with the former's zip lines and underwater sections and the latter's bouncy goo and Eggman fight - must be the definitive versions of these stages now.
With the same awesome devs at the helm I wouldn't mind more refreshed zones in the sequel. In any case, refurbishing old zones may just be Mania's thing going forward so I suggest adjusting expectations accordingly.
I want a Sonic Adventure 3!
I'd also be happy with a Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle full remake with modern graphics, but keep the gameplay mechanics intact.
The Sonic games should just go dormant for 5 years or until SEGA figures out how to make a good Sonic game.
I'm interested to see what's next for 3D Sonic. I can't imagine that SEGA will alone rely on Sonic Mania sequels to represent their mascot.
But will Sonic Team learn from Forces to make a good game or will they learn the wrong lesson and disappoint once again?
Sonic Maker, calling it now.
@Zach777 Imagine if Sonic Maker was a mode included in a Mania 2.
In related news, death and taxes will also still be around in 2020. Some franchises...like Sonic...really don't need (and some might argue, deserve) the sort of endless and predictable "hype" they receive every single year. And especially when there are so many long-dormant and beloved IPs Sega just continues to sit on and ignore.
I got excited for a moment by mistaking that headline meant that the Sega Ages version of Sonic 2 was coming sooner than later.
"To you, all of you, thank you for making the past several years of Sonic so amazing"
You mean just Sonic Mania right? Team Sonic racing was a huge disappointment and the less said about Forces the better
Sonic Mania began development in 2015, and the Sonic Twitter started posting wacky maymays in 2015 - so either there's Sonic Mania 2, a new classic game in general (I'd love to see a Crash-esqe 3D classic game) or they're swapping manager for the Twitter.
Sonic mania 2?
I'm tired of Sonic being the only classic IP Sega cares about.
Give me Sonic R2 and Sonic Chronicles 2.
"Gotta go fast!" What I want is a new Sonic Adventure with new content that'll last.
I doubt it’s Sonic Mania 2, weren’t those guys trying to get a Kickstarter off the ground recently because they had no work?
@BulkSlash Not quite, that Kickstarter is just being done by Taxman, who is only one of the two Mania leads.
The words "flame", "puzzle" and the latin sentence make me think of a Sonic Storybook 3 for some reason.
Probably not gonna happen, but that'd be cool.
@AtlanteanMan If it weren't for microsoft throwing money at sega, we wouldn't be getting PSO2 in the US. Sega has been sitting on an english translation for years that they put out in south east asia. They said the game was coming out over here in 2013.. here it is 2020 and it is finally coming out because sega couldn't be bothered to have brought it over themselves. Also I would like a phantasy star rpg again please. Streets of rage 4 only exists because some indie devs decided to ask sega if they could make it, Sonic mania only exists because of fans. Honestly if it was left up to sega the only games we would get are Miku diva games, yakuza, and sonic.
Anyways lets face it, Nintendo is bad about abandoning IPs also (chibi robo, f-zero, custom robo, ect.) but sega is probably sitting on a mountain of them and just doesn't care. Nintendo fans at least get to see the franchises in smash in some form or fashion.
@Burning_Bacon,
Yeah, and that Panzer Dragoon remake is yet another outsourced project. Even Shenmue III had to be run as a Kickstarter by the original creator. I would love another proper, SRPG Shining Force (or even a complete, all-three-Scenarios, remastered Shining Force III), or better yet an entire Saturn compilation. Skies of Arcadia, Dragon Force, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and yes, old school Phantasy Star, not to mention their plethora of great arcade offerings (M2 has had to do the honors for the ones that have come out for Switch's Sega Ages lineup), would all be welcomed with open arms. Sadly though, Sega acts as if only the Genesis ever existed as far as compilations, and as if only Sonic ever mattered to anyone. So much money left on the table, because people WANT and would absolutely pay for these games.
Sonic Mania 2! But later down the road I’d love a 3D Sonic Mania.
I would welcome Sonic Mania 2. The first one is so good I ended up double dipping just to get the physical version. I'd love to see a new Sonic Adventure, but I'm not holding my breath for that. I would be content with ports of the Adventure games and Generations on Switch.
I actually hope the levels in Mania 2 are shorter. Seems like the levels in Mania just dragged on and on. More worlds, shorter acts. That would be good for me.
If there is a sonic mania 2, I really hope ice cap zone will be in it
@Jokerwolf There is some other musician that worked on Sonic 3 that is also causing a legal problem for Sega. I think the name was Brad Buxer.
@Elvie Ya it sucks overall, Sega could just redo all the tracks and be done with it. I am not super attached to them since they are all just MJ tunes slowed down or sped up.
@AtlanteanMan Oh you are breaking my heart right now, I love shining force 1 & 2, Skies of arcadia is a hidden gem on the gamecube even if the music quality is inferior to the genisis. Sega has nintendo levels of IP that they just have rotting on the floor because it isnt a 3D sonic game that they can meme the crap out of to keep in relevance
@Jokerwolf Sega had a fully translated PSO2 just sitting there. You think the lazy company is going to do anything unless a lot of profit comes with it? They do nothing but Sonic games that are rushed through to make a deadline, yakuza, and genisis collections. Sega for their genisis mini was originally going to use @tgames (the same people who make those drugstore atarisega flash backs that are super crappy and have bad audio and emulation) to make their mini console before people blew up on them for it.
@Burning_Bacon Sonic Mania was not rushed though, they put a lot of love into that game. I agree their track record is pretty lousy though so I understand the pessimism my friend.
@Jokerwolf there were some thing still rushed with sonic mania, like tails not having an animation in chemical plant zone when the chemical drips on his head at the begining of the act. Now it was implemented later in an update or by the plus dlc but it was always in the files for the game.
Don't get me wrong, I think sonic mania is the first good move in years for sonic because while I loved generations and colors, everything that followed was kinda half baked or just meh
@Burning_Bacon Yep I agree with you, and I think it brings up an issue with a lot of developers not doing proper QA in their games.
@Jokerwolf of course I forgot about the MJ composed music.
Sonic Adventure port then perhaps...
Companion app for raising Chao would be fun (and horribly unlikely)
Remember that character creation mode that was in Sonic Forces? I'd really like to see that option return, I've been a Sonic fan for about the last 20 years or so and I'm 25 now, I'd also like to see both the 3D and 2D modes return as well. Basically what I'm saying is I'd like to see maybe a sequel to Sonic Forces, another thing I'd like to see return in a future Sonic game is Blaze.
@Jokerwolf They could use the alternate soundtrack from the PC release.
