It's the weekend! This wonderful time of the week means that the hard-working members of team Nintendo Life are all heading off to play some of those video game things we all love (while keeping several eyes on the site to make sure it doesn't explode, of course). This week, some of the team are off to EGX, some are exploring the new Online functionalities, and others are reminiscing over old favourites.
But what about you? Make sure to read on through, leave a vote in our poll, and then a comment in the... well, comments. Enjoy!
Alex Olney, video producer
Well, I’ll be at EGX this Saturday, and in fact, that’s where I’m writing this from as you read it. With that in mind, I’ll be slamming some fools in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate no doubt and making my way through whatever games take my fancy, so chances are I’ll be making death traps in RollerCoaster Tycoon (the original) for six hours. As for Sunday, who knows? Maybe I’ll knock out a little bit more Skyrim, or perhaps have some fun in Splatoon 2; if I don’t know what game to play, Splatoon’s usually a safe bet.

A few weeks ago I couldn’t find a reason to turn my Switch on but Nintendo keeps finding a way to ensure I neglect my PS4! This time, with Torna - The Golden Country.
To call this a DLC is almost insulting because I’ve played so many fully-fledged games with far less content - some of which were JRPGs themselves! I struggled to get into Xenoblade Chronicles 2 but this one captured my attention from the get-go. The combat system might be my favourite ever, the characters have genuine warmth and charm, and the world is an absolute joy to explore. I’m nearing the end of it now, and I’m sad about it. That’s rare for me. I typically want to just burn through games at an insane pace. Ah well, I’ll be straight back into Xenoblade 2 when I’m done!

This weekend won’t be much different from my last one in terms of the video games I’ll be playing. With the Nintendo Switch Online service now live, I intend to get maximum use out of the free 7-day trial while I still can. It means I’ll be spending my time in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2 and Rocket League. When I’m not busy with these modern releases, I’ll be hitting up the NES digital library and playing titles like Excitebike, Dr. Mario and Super Mario Bros.. Once my free ride finally comes to an end, I guess I’ll have to fork out some cash for a membership.

We quickly devoured Overcooked in our household when it came to Switch and we’re only a couple of levels away from polishing off Overcooked 2. We try to ration it out, but it’s just too good! Cannot wait for the upcoming 4-star update.
I also picked up Metal Slug on sale this week, a game I’ve never played before. Conversely, the arrival of the online service means I’ll burn through Super Mario Bros. 3 for the umpteenth time. I tried it out briefly on Wednesday and wasn’t too impressed with the single Joy-Con controls or precision of the analogue stick – I mean, I’m terrible at 2D Mario but not THAT bad. Fortunately, my trusty 8bitdo FC30 Pro works a treat.

Well, there went my vacations. Despite my better efforts to complete Octopath Traveler, the fact that I picked up as many new games as there were days of vacation(!) quickly derailed that quaint, laid out plan. Despite some good progress made in Square Enix's opus, the release of The Messenger reassigned priorities and I am now on the game’s final stretch.
Another surprise came with the three-year-old Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders offering plenty of content-per-buck and I will work on getting that last plane variant. I reserved some time to defend all things retro in the latest (under new rules) Splatoon 2 Splatfest extravaganza, but will now also need to sneak into the surprise Dark Souls: Remastered stress test.
Last but certainly not least I will out-skate, out-defend and out-score any and all on my Switch friends list who are foolish enough take me on a game of NES Ice Hockey. No, I don’t play it with a team of four ‘Warios’, that would be inhumanly cruel.

This weekend I'll be sitting down with one of my favourite games of the current generation - and one most people haven't heard of - Armello. It's basically a digital board game full of anthropomorphic knights and rogues vying to control the crown. It's a brilliant little game and one that left a big impression on me on PS4 four years ago. Here's hoping it can live up to the same level of quality now it's coming to Nintendo Switch. I'll also be sitting down with my eldest to play more of Scribblenauts Mega Pack. Because who needs an excuse to share your love of Batman and all things DC?

This weekend is that one, glorius weekend of the year where EGX is in full swing in the UK. I'll be heading to the event on Sunday, no doubt having a good, proper go at Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, Starlink: Battle for Atlas, and many, many more. Oh, how could I forget Untitled Goose Game?! This one's genuinely sitting at the top of my must-try list.
Elsewhere, just like Gavin above, my household has also been working our way through Overcooked 2 and having an absolute blast. If we have any time before heading off to the event, we'll no doubt be turning on the ovens, chopping those carrots, and accidentally pushing one another into oblivion for hours on end.

Some Fortnite, some OCTOPATH, some Splatoon 2 for the Splatfest, maybe I'll even give Dark Souls a second go, since I didn't really like it at first.
I'll be taking on Phantom Hourglass for the first time. Got bored of waiting for something more than NES games on Switch, so just went out and got an old DS instead. However, I'll probably also get in some Kirby Star Allies (love the music) and maybe even finally start Octopath Traveler.
Yours truly will be playing uncharted 4 which i just drop a few minutes ago (beautiful game) and will be continue throug the weekend. But also will leave space for mmxac 1, mmz3 and sunday morning ill continue with radiant historia. I will make sure to leave space to go up a rank in mhgu.
Skyrim and Octopath Traveler.
Some classic Sonic
Lightning Force
Metal slug
And some Dirt 4 on the Xbox!
This weekend I will be mostly playing:
Kirby & the Amazing Mirror
Super Toad 3D World
I would have joined in the Splatfest, but I don’t yet feel like buying a subscription, so my Switch will stay offline for now.
Changing the subject, Virtua Racing has appeared on the Sega Ages Archives Website
http://archives.sega.jp/segaages/
This is fantastic news, que Virtua Fighter, Daytona, Sega Rally
1. The Sims 4 (PS4)

Building a new house again with testing cheats enabled, so i can manipulate some objects to be put on my desire position.
2. Gardening Mama (NDS)

Still unlocking some New fruits / flowers / vegetables.
3. Dillon's Dead Heat Breakers (3DS)

Still keep collecting money from Part time job and i will hire some Top gunners to fight against Grocks.
My weekend:
MGS 3D
Zelda MM
Bayonetta
Doom
and Maybe Mario Odysee.
I also want to buy PS4 but my 3ds and Switch alreadt provide me with so much entertainment its pure greed and though i spiderman seems like a killer game en same for God of War, i dont feel i really miss on them.
Also need to buy Zelda BOTW still, you guys have no idea that i am deep in paradise as a gamer.
Zelda Twilight princess hd
Super Mario Maker
Octopath Traveller and some Splatoon 2, so the same as every weekend since July 13th
Earthlock, I picked it up a few weeks ago in a sale and it’s pretty good! It feels like a game between FF9-10. It looks nice, has interesting combat (with actions mapped to buttons which makes things snappy for a turn based system) but the writing is kind of annoying. The characters are fun but there are a heck of a lot of made up words flying around to confuse things.
Just beat level 19 in Dr. Mario. Took me like 3 hours in total. It mostly comes down to luck and the level layout if I can beat the last few stages. Didn't expect it to become quite this hard after I was able to finish the first 15 stages with one or two deaths.
Still enjoying Kirby and the rainbow paintbrush on Wii U!
Skyrim, Skyrim and more Skyrim. Awesome that so many people are still playing it. Also, The Beat em up Bundle and some NES games on Switch. Mainly Double Dragon and Gradius.
Dark Souls
Mario Tennis
Beat 'em Up Bundle
Thunderforce IV
Omega Fighter
Super Mario Bros 3
Read earlier that Sega Ages Thunderforce AC and Columns 2 will have online multiplayer. Great news!
Probably some Ys VIII, Splatoon 2, Victor Vran and NES titles.
@Gerald You have no idea how happy that makes me. That was one of the games at the top of my wishlist. Finally we will get an arcade perfect, in fact arcade bettered version of Virtua Racing. Perhaps even with 60fps like Outrun. Superb news. Is this the winner from the fan poll they done?
@OorWullie not sure if was the poll winner. I am hoping it is not, so it’s not a one off for the Virtua Series
Rocket League on PC and i might download Distance, a survival racing game
Dead Cells for me, possibly some DQ Builders and Paladins. Also taking the fam to Renaissance Faire today because yes, we are massive nerds.
Some friends are coming over and we will play the Capcom beat em up Bundle! 🤤
Splatoon 2 for the Splatfest as well as other online Switch games in general. Also finishing off the community in Torna.
I've been playing Ocarina of Time Randomized. So far, I've had an easy time finding really important items, but the randomizer chose to be sadistic in its location for the Kokiri Sword, and I'm only a few dungeons away from beating the game, and I still can't find the damn thing! Doesn't really matter anyways, since I already beat the child dungeons and Young Link's half of the Spirit Temple.
Odyssey, Battle Chasers, Broken Sword 5 and some NES games....among others.
Too many games!
Hopefully get chance to play some twilight princess on wii tomorrow. Hard going back to non HD graphics on an HD TV. Also working my way through the messenger which is really good but also really bloody hard!
I'm still playing the amazing... Dragon Quest XI !
This game is a beast.
I will play a bit of splatoon for the splat fest (go retro!) and I might dip into a bit of Skyrim. But mostly, I will be playing Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate!
Xenoblade 2 and Cities Skylines!
Spider man
Dark souls
Ice climbers
And octopath
After finishing Super Metroid to 100%, I am jumping into a play through of the very controversial Other M for the first time in years. And I am enjoying it. Sue me.
Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition (PS4) and Cosmic Star Heroine (PSVita). Trying to finish up some of these shorter games before VC4 comes out and I drop everything.
More Octopath Traveler 🙂
Today I have been mostly playing super Mario Bros 3! Despite previously slagging the NES Switch games off I have found myself reluctantly planning on buying the years membership after getting hooked on this again
Dark souls mario 3 and Monster Hunter ultimate! I enjoyed dark souls so much I’ve pre ordered 😁
The Binding Of Isaac, still. Am unlocking some random items here and there, and am (im)patiently awaiting Booster Packs 4 and 5, and am also very eager for news about Repentence. But, it occurs to me... for the whole time that these "What are you playing this weekend?" articles have been running, I don't think that I have ever seen anybody else mention this game! I hope that it wasn't a flop on Switch. Am at 650 hours now! 😆 And... such a relief to have my save backed up now! Have a great weekend, guys.
Xenoblade Chronicles Torna
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate
Dark Souls Network Test
Final Fantasy XV
SEGA AGES: Sonic the Hedgehog
SEGA AGES: Thunderforce IV
Excitebike
Torna is so gosh dang good, and Monster Hunter (obviously). Just unlocked a whole slew of high rank 8 star quests. Took down Nargacuga and Lavasioth.
Game is crack. If I were stranded on an island, this would be game I'd want to play the rest of my life.
Victor vran such fun skyrim and dark souls
I’ll definitely be playing Nefarious and Undertale on Switch. It’s been a great month for Nindies!
I restarted my Animal Crossing: New Leaf for the umpteenth time so I’ll probably go back to that.
I’ve be fiddling with the NES games included with the Online Service. I really enjoyed Yoshi! I’ll also be playing in the Splatfest (Team Retro!)
Everyone have a safe, fun, God-blessed weekend! 😃
There's gonna be some Metal Slug, some Samurai Shodown, some the Messenger and a lot of Legend of Zelda
Gonna finish Bayonetta
Sitting at the Dublin airport waiting to head back to the states. Can't wait to download nso and play some NES games!
I love that Splatoon 2 is currently raking in the votes and it's over a year old. That said, The Messenger has my full attention at the moment. Indie game of the year, with Chasm (playing on my Vita) a close second.
Still on a Dead Cells binge myself. I did hit Skyrim last night... then straight back to Dead Cells.
Hyper Light Drifter. I've opened the way to the final boss, and I'm doing clean up now. I also did the 800 dash challenge, and the outfit that doubles your stamina was so worth it.
Steredenn: Binary Stars. I can always see myself playing a few rounds of one of my favorite Rogue-lites.
Splatoon 2. I might join in on the splatfest using the online trial. I may even get a subscription to it one day for cloud saves...I just want to see the service improve some before I do.
Spiderman. I still haven't started it, and I need to.
@Anti-Matter Do you have a physical copy of Dead Heat Breakers? I wanted one, but they didn't release one here in the states!
Prison architect
Nothing because all I ever play is Splatoon and I’m holding out for a bit on the online subscription nonsense.
The correct answer is the Capcom Beatemup Bundle 😋.
Might play some Detention, Dark Souls, Broforce, or revisit some NES games again. Already played through the NSO offerings, but at least some are very replayable.
@1UP_MARIO I've been working my way through Twilight Princess again too. One of my favorite Zelda games! Since I caved and got switch online cheap through a family group, I decided to revisit the original Zelda. It's been probably almost ten years since I last played through it. The world and level design totally holds up despite the primitive graphics. The foundation is there, the essence of a Zelda game.
What's really frustrating are the controls. I think if you could just move diagonally this game would be so much more enjoyable and would be a timeless classic! As it is it's completely overshadowed by Link to the Past and every other mainline Zelda game since.
I'm still working through the Master Quest side of Ocarina of Time 3D. I knew the world would be mirrored and that the enemies would cause double damage, but these rearranged dungeons are something else entirely.
On the Wii U front, I'm working my way through Paper Mario: Color Splash and just snagged the first big red
painpaint star.@SamuraiPanda I guess no one at Nintendo Life is a MH fan.
Not sure yet. Might play some Pocket Camp and some other games on my iPad. If I get into my 2DS XL again, I will probably play Ultra Sun and Crystal
@thesilverbrick I didnt understand the hate for this game. The story wasnt terrible and the game was actually quite entertaining.
As soon as I kick this god forsaken hangover I'll play Octopath. Truly an amazing game.
@sandman89
Same here I really enjoyed the dark souls online test I preordered it!
I just finished the fantastic and perhaps slightly underrated Songbringr so I might continue my adventures in The Count Lucanor!
This weekend I will be playing Mortal Kombat X, Forza Horizon 2, Octopath Traveller, and other random games. 😏
More Dark souls,Mario 3, and Dead Cells.
Splatfest in Splatoon 2 and completing expeditions in Monster Hunter Stories
Hyrule Warriors, Spider-Man and trying the Dark Souls test on the Switch. Not sure how I feel about it to be honest.
Dust and Owlboy!
Xenoblade Chronicles 2, super Mario Odyssey, and botw
@adam9431 I definitely will admit that the story has a few holes and I don’t particularly agree with how Samus was characterized, but the gameplay is absolutely solid and the production values are excellent. I’m not afraid to admit I love Other M, and it’s nice to meet someone who feels the same!
@thesilverbrick for me, video games are about having fun. I like games for what they are, not what they ought to be. If I dislike a game it's because I didnt find it enjoyable, not because it doesnt "feel like a _____ game." Also, yes I form opinions about games I see online without having tried hem, but I would never discount a game just because people online said it is terrible, etc. This, unfortunately was Other M's fate. It got a bad reputation and people wouldn't give it a fair chance.
Capcom Beat em up, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Street Fighter V, and King of Fighters 14, for PS4.
SNK Heroines, Freedom Planet and Mario Odyssey on Switch.
I'm all about Shadow of the Tomb Raider right now. Thus far, I think it's the best out of the three.
Just hit the 50 hour mark in Xenoblade Chronicles 3D... and still feel like I am just scratching the surface!
Such an amazing game.
Unfortunately my weekend is gonna get cut short cause of a business trip, but I intend to play some Spider-Man on PS4, Octopath and try to find some time to try the Dark Souls network test.
Going through ys VIII and have to say that the combat is boring and the story not very compelling (tented to go and buy a physical copy of the "dlc" of the best game on the system straight way...)
Oh and had 5min into dark souls with B button to accept and no thanks already deleted
Splatoon 2
go team retro!
Labo Vehicle Kit (finally finished assembling the toy-cons and just started adventure mode), Super Mario Odyssey, and then on my 2DS maybe Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga.
Sorry to say, but probably not any Nintendo games this weekend. My time will be devoted to the following:
1. My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic on iOS (due to a new limited time story event)
2. Spyro the Dragon on PS3
3. Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage on PS3
4. Spyro: Year of the Dragon on PS3
5. Klonoa: Door to Phantomile on PS3
I know: I'm a traitor for saying I'm going to be playing iOS and PlayStation games on a Nintendo website. I am prepared for whatever criticism you other site users have for me.
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate during the day (it feels like farming Dreadqueen Rathian has taken over my life) and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney as my "chill out at bedtime" game (finally decided to play my way through the series).
I think I’m finally getting towards the end in Okami, just in time for getting Dead Cells on Monday.
A bit of NESflix, Dark Souls and Retro Splatfest if I have time
I'm addicted to Reigns.
Still on DQXI
Have my copy of Torna but not opened it yet... and looks like Valky4 will join in. But had to take advantage of the 20% off and LE.
DQXI is to my schedule what Godzilla is to a city 🙄
@Giygas_95
Eh...
My Dillon's Dead Heat Breakers is USA version, digital download.
But, i'm planning to get the Europe version for Physical release.
Iv'e been teaching myself Dr. Mario and I HIGHLY recommend Keep talking and nobody Explodes.
@adam9431: The good thing out of all of that is that I just snagged a new copy online for about $6. I haven't played it yet, but despite the so-so story, the gameplay is supposedly pretty decent. I need something to hold me over until Prime 4 in any case!
Continuing on my way towards 100 percenting the Mega Man Zero Collection, I finally finished up Zero 2 by getting the Ultimate Form today. I was quite dreading this particular game since it's probably the one I've got the least memories of, but it went surprisingly smoothly all things considered. Knowing that Z2 still required the player to upgrade every elf after aquiring them, I was expecting to have to grind again to get all of 'em upgraded, but luckily, the energy requirement for the elves combined are literally less than even a third of what they were in Z1, so it really wasn't a big deal.
I also ended up doing an elfless run of the game before going back and using 'em all even though only Z1 has that requirement tied to its unlocks just because I felt in the mood after Z1 made me do it.
@Krull you're a person after my own heart, I love Krull, totally underrated.
anyway, this weekend, I'm hitting L.A. Noire a little more, Axiom Verge (looking for some missed things) and LoZ: Link Between Worlds -just because the replay value is top notch
The Messenger for some platforming action and Into the Breach for some tactical missions.
BTW there is a Nicalis sale on the US eshop, so I grabbed Tiny Barbarian and will try it out as well. Considering Ittle Dew 2+ as well.
Busy weekend so not much playing, but I grabbed Tiny Barbarian and Isaac. Time to restart my Isaac addiction lol. TB is awesome btw. Put an hour in last night. Also grabbing Torna and preordering FighterZ tomorrow. As for playing: Beat em up bundle, The Cards (Texas hold em), and some Dead Cells runs.
Skyrim and Mario + Rabbids
NES games! Legend of Zelda should’ve been on there.
Dragon Quest 11, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Smash for Wii U. Yeah, the Wii U lives on.
Since I just finished the main story of Spider-man, I'll probably go back and mess around in the city some more. But I've been back into playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf, just doing random things as usual. Also got XC2 Torna The Golden Country, so I may hop into that as well.
Had an epic session on Splatoon 2. My first Splatfest since I bought the game, I was team retro and most of the time we took a savage beating sadly.... I did what I could and upped my rank a lot. My last game we got butchered by an all girl team, they were brilliant! That's what I love about Splatoon 2 is that it's a really good mix. It's not a total sausagefest.
I played Pokemon Go today on Community day. Got 5 shiny Chikoritas. Fully evolved 4 of them by the end of the day. Hopefully I can get back into Spider-man tomorrow. I haven't been able to touch it since launch day.
I'm playing Hover on my Switch, I just unlocked my very own GamerHQ-i'm gonna rename it Digi02 Lounge! And Splatoon 2!
Quite a bit of Splatoon 2 and a little Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Try to get some time in on Metroid Prime 3: Corruption on Sunday.
Monster hunter generations ultimate for life!
Android:
Age of Empires: Castle Siege
Wordament Snap Attack
Switch:
Splatoon 2 - Played the SplatFest
Dark Souls Remastered - Playing the network test
Batman: The TellTale Series - Playing Episode 4 and enjoying every minute of it
Playing absolutely nothing this weekend. Sleeping and browsing the internet. Mostly sleeping.
Octopath Traveler for sure. Tested Dark Soul and... yeah lol. I actually like it, but I now see it'll take a level of concentration I don't really have right now lol, so I'll come back to that game later. I've also played several NES games and beat Double Dragon for the first time in years.
Didn't think I'd have time, but I got in some Hollow Knight and even made some late game progress (still putting off finishing it. ). I'm allowing myself some internet hints and avoiding answers, but some of these secrets are really subtle and difficult.
Mr. Mushroom was logical to get a clue poem for, but the poem was horrible at directing you to the locations, and you have to do them in order even though it's not clear where each clue starts and ends. :/
You are almost better off exploring the entire map than trying to figure it out by clue because you might be looking at a place over and over, convinced you understood what was meant, but you were out of order or just wrong.
It's supposed to pay off eventually, but there was no immediate reward except extra awesome quirkiness. I'm loving the game, but getting 100+% might not be worth it for me. I'm at 94% I think, maybe a bit more. (I saw that someone had 106% but I don't know the maximum.)
I've decided that Stardew Valley and Spider-Man (yes, I'd need to buy a PS4 ... ) are going to be must plays for me, so I'm going to have to wrap this game up, soon. (And those would be additions to the big backlog, so... )
Overcooked 2 still gets played, so I might be trying to progress a little further with my family.
Okami HD
