Nintendo shocked everyone when it announced that it would be bringing Luigi’s Mansion to the 3DS, but the move makes a whole lot of sense given that the game’s sequel saw its debut on the portable. Many assumed that the port would be handled by Next Level Games—the studio behind Metroid Prime: Federation Force and Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon—considering that this remake appears to be running on a modified version of the engine its sequel used, but it’s just come to light that another studio is doing the port.
A listing for the game recently showed up on the Australian Classification Board, and Grezzo is listed as the developer. The studio made its name doing the ports of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D, as well as some original work with the more recent Ever Oasis. It’s a bit of a surprise, but now that just begs the question: what is Next Level Games working on?
What do you think? Will you be picking up Luigi’s Mansion for your 3DS? What do you think Next Level Games is doing instead? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Maybe a Luigi’s Mansion 3 is in the works
@Dr_Shellshock ... Exclusive for 3DS!
Most definitely will upgrade from the GameCube version to this, just so to have them both on the same system. It's kind of become a sort of October tradition I play one of these two games actually. This year it might be both, should it come out before HalloweeN. Good times.
Seems kinda pointless but okay whatever I guess
This is some really good news. Grezzo did a Fan-freaking-tastic job with the Zelda remaster's. I mean Majoras Mask 3D was above and beyond what a remaster should be. So hopefully the final product will be far better in quality than what we saw in the trailer.
And hey if Next Level Games is working on Luigi's Mansion 3 for the Switch then I am even more ok with this port since it will give us 2 Luigi Manion games within the same year. And for those of you who want the 3DS dead. Don't worry, it still going till 2020
Ever oasis from this guys is an awesome game !!!
@Ricube Don't give THEM any ideas.
I think I'll just wait for the GameCube Virtual Console port for Switch that may or may not come. Sorry but in this time and age, it's really hard for me to return to 360p 3D graphic.
I liked Dark Moon but from what I've seen of Mansion 1, Dark Moon seems to be the inferior version, so I'm hyped for this.
This game has much better atmosphere than the second and I think tighter gameplay as well. Can't wait for it!
I wonder if i can Save the game anytime for Luigi Mansion 3DS as i remember on Dark Moon, you Can't Save the game anytime due to have to finished the Mission first.
@Anti-Matter In the original, you had to find a Toad in order to save. They aren't that hard to find, but it definitely isn't a simple "Save and Quit" any time you want. They'll probably keep that system in place for the remake.
@Ricube better not be!... Ninty did a stupid thing by putting LM on 3ds when it should be on Switch... It would have sold more I think... I love LM and I would of got it on Switch, but 3ds...nope, sale lost
@Yoshi it use to auto save every time you catched a boo.
@1UP_MARIO Yes, I forgot about that! It asks for a save every time you catch a Boo. You can tell its been a while since I played it last.
@Yoshi it’s one of the things that annoyed me in the game
I wonder which biazarre and/or unnecessary changes will be made.
Luigi's Mansion 3 on Switch by Next Level Games wouldn't be a very shocking E3 announcement.
Another game being added to the list of games to buy, at this rate I'll run out of hours to play them!!!!! Na !
Maybe they're porting Mario Sunshine?
@Yoshi However, I generally just leave my 3DS on sleep mode for 99% of it's life. I almost never save and quit.
I get that's not everyone though... Sometimes it does run out of battery and die though...
Retro Studios working on a new IP is very credible in my opinion. I think it will be something a bit more mature than the typical Nintendo game. I'm not saying Wolfenstein 2 kind of mature...
So another great port then!
What's with all the LM2 revisionism going on here? Not long ago everyone raved about LM2 being one of the very best games on 3DS, now all I see is grumbles...
@Yoshi I’d actually be surprised if they keep the toad saving, but we’ll see. Save & quit + handheld seems to be the way to go.
i remembered this game when it launched with the gamecube. it was a great period, alot of new ip's, the older games reinvented, after that i turned to the xbox360 because i did not like the wii at all.
this game should be on the nintendo switch, like alot of nintendo gamecube games.
there only 2 games from the wii period i missed and willing to play.
metroid and skyward princess.
it would be great if nintendo hires a studio and make these games playable for the nintendo switch. i dont care if its physical or digital or that i have to subscribe to play these games like on the xbox one.
Nice, I'm hopeful this'll turn out great then!
As much as I love my 3DS, I would much rather have this on Switch. Fantastic GC launch game along with Rogue Squadron 2
stoked for this, and they are adding 3D effect so props to Grezzo for that! I don't get the hate, loads of people are enjoying 3DS still, get over it.
Nostalgic sigh GameCube launch night. Boy, has it been that long already...? As for this game, I’d have liked an HD remaster on the Switch, but setting my personal preference aside, this will (hopefully) be excellent for 3DS-wieldin’ newcomers who want to check out a classic!
Remember everyone, "Next Level Games" also made the Mario Strikers titles on GC and Wii... What if they're making a Mario Strikers Switch!!
I'd be happy if they were doing either that or Luigi's Mansion 3 for Switch.
I'm not bothered by the 3DS living on into 2019 or whatever they want. I only buy like 5-6 games a year so I can afford that. It's an incredible collection and the system will go down as one of the best. I'll happily let my son start using it in a few years.
@retro_player_22 You mean 240p.
@Banjos_Backpack Wut?
Cya
Raziel-chan
I am glad this is coming to the 3DS and I am super glad it will have stereoscopic 3D effect.
So Nintendo will be able to put "From the team that brought you Zelda: Ocarina of Time" on the box, like they did with Ever Oasis...
I'd have considered buying this if it was on the Switch but the 3DS has been dead to me for quite some time unfortunately
This will probably be my last 3DS game.
Probably grab this one for my nephew, so he'll have both. Hopefully the Switch will get it at some point.
@Perryg92 This!! Mario Strikers Charged was a favorite growing up, so a new one one Switch would be excellent.
GreZzo definitely helps to make me optimistic about the port. However my backlog on Switch will never shrink if I don’t lay my 3ds on the back-burner for awhile, Would not be surprised to see a “Luigi’s Mansion 3” reveal at E3 since they have the port of “Luigi’s Mansion” going to the 3ds and that product will definitely help to market Luigi’s Mansion 3. Then again what do I know, I’m just a 29 year old who plays his Switch religiously and I’m damn proud of it.
I can’t wait to play this game on my 2DS. I don’t have a lot of time to game and prefer to do it on my 2DS XL. Maybe that will change when Yoshi and Pokémon come out but I doubt it. So I’m excited for this.
Grezzo does such good work, so I'm not worried about it in the slightest.
Isn't Next Level Games working on Mario Tennis Aces?
when it said grezzo I immediately thought grezzo as in the highly NSFW doom mod grezzo 2
I wonder how the pressure-sensitive functions of the Poltergust will be implemented (if they are at all). Hopefully this being the age of 2DS doesn't cause Grezzo to lazily exclude this as well as optional stereoscopic 3D. They did decide to milk the 3DS instead of releasing this on Nintendo's currently most accessible platform, after all, so, they'd be fools to make something that could've otherwise easily been developed for Switch.
@MikeW Camelot actually.
@Pikachupwnage
Ah yes! I confused Super Mario Strikers with Mario Tennis
I'm sticking with the original on the big screen and the Gamecube controller is much better for this sort of game.
I want to go back to a 3DS XL just for this game.
Buying Luigi's Mansion regardless however — I cannot wait to play the first one; I have the second digitally for 3DS. I missed the first one - I was too hung up on Rogue Squadron, Tony Hawk, and Eternal Darkness.
I cannot wait for this, it's fitting that the game will finally be in 3D after it was one of Nintendo's first experiments with the effect way back when.
I'm surprised to see the negative comments about Dark Moon though, for me it's an incredible game and one of the best on the 3DS.
I really hope this means Next Level Games are working on a third game for the Switch, just imagine how good it could look and how great the animations could be with the power of the Switch !! E3 can't come soon enough ! lol
@patbacknitro18 Nah, the 3DS will still be getting games even after the Switch is dead!
Sweet!
All I could ever ask from Next Level Games is a new Mario Strikers. PLEASE DO IT
Wow... That's actually really exciting.
I'm really looking forward to this. I liked Luigi's Mansion on the Gamecube quite a bit but was not a fan of Dark Moon. This was mainly due to the gameplay progression interrupting me every 5-10 minutes with its mission based setup, and I couldn't get into. I also think Grezzo did a superb job with the Zelda remakes so I'm pretty excited for that.
Aside from streetpass when I go into the city, I don't really touch my 3DS anymore. It would be pretty cool if Nintendo released a double pack of Luigi's Mansion 1 and 2 on the Switch at some point in HD. THAT I would buy in a heartbeat.
100 percent yes!
Fine by me! My confidence in Grezzo so far has not been misplaced; they've proven themselves in my book. I'm hoping to start on Ever Oasis soon, actually.
For all the people talking aboot a new mario strikers, a think you could have nailed it, tennis is coming out june 22, Wimbledon starts jul 2 (week and 3 days later) perfect timing,
World Cup starts jun 14 ..............
So fingers crossed
Grezzo did an excellent job making Ocarina of Time 3D and Majora's Mask 3D, probably the finest games with best calibrated stereoscopic 3D, so yeah, bring it on!
I read "Grizzco" porting Luigi's Mansion. Luigi got splatted by a Flyfish!
Glad they are still getting work from Nintendo after their original IP Ever Oasis didn't work out.
Nice. The 3D Zelda games were fantastic, so I trust that Grezzo will do a fine job porting LM1.
This is the only 3ds game I'm looking forward to, and even more so now I know grezzo is developing it...something that no one has mentioned in the comments though is that grezzo was rumoured to be developing the next zelda reimagining, whether it be for the Switch or 3ds, so who is developing it? Or are grezzo developing two games??? Questions questions?...
Idiotic decision for this to only be on the 3DS, guess I'll just continue to play it for the GameCube then
If the price is right, come on down to my 3ds
Looking forward to this one.
